Reviews Summary

Apero Food and Wine is celebrated for its outstanding food and impeccable service, with many diners calling it their 'must-do' Auckland spot. The wine list is particularly praised for its thoughtful selection and expert pairing advice. While the cozy ambiance is a highlight, some guests have noted that certain dishes can be overly salty, and the limited seating can make it feel cramped at times.

"Loved the signature sausage. Snapper was very nice as well. Pasta’s portion was a bit small to share."

"We had a dinner last night, we were there for truffle dishes, so we had 3 truffle toasts and the truffle fettuccine, toast are great but the fettuccine was so salty! The waiter asked us for feedback which I told him it’s too salty, he just told us “ yeah, because it’s truffle” well, we love Apero a lot, basically will come every year! We also had other truffle dishes somewhere else, never had one like that ever! We might ordered less dishes than we should for 3 person, but we still spent $167 last night, and that service like that was not good enough to be honest.I still love Apero and the boss is nice, but with this kind of experience, I’ll double think before I go next time."

Desserted by 8pm: Aucklanders revel in status as world’s earliest diners | New Zealand

At 6.15pm down the road at Apero, the restaurant is three-quarters full. The World fashion designer Benny Castles, here with his parents, says early dining is instilled in colonial Kiwi farming culture and the way cities are designed, especially Auckland with its urban sprawl and limited public transport. “You don’t become friends with a New Zealander until you’ve been invited into their household, so a lot of people eat at home.

Four years on from opening, Apéro is more bustling than ever. Leslie Hottiaux and Mo Koski can no longer operate their hole-in-the-wall wine bar alone, but it still feels homely and intimate, thanks to its attentive, laid-back and charming staff. With an evolving and adventurous list, a drink here is a lesson in good wine, one that is accompanied by moreish French fare ranging from bite-sized goat-cheese croquettes, to a rib eye that feeds a crowd — and that sausage is still the most satisfying bar snack in town.Go for—a glass of something you’ve never tried before, and some sausage.

The Best Auckland Restaurants (Updated 2025)

Taking its name from the urban French tradition of enjoying a quality drop and bite in good company, it comes as no surprise that Apéro is one of the best French restaurants in Auckland. In true French bistro fashion, delectable lunches and dinners are served as a mix of small sharing and grazing plates, with the odd hearty dish thrown into the mix. French bistro classics are aplenty here: there’s a terrine of the day, a signature Apéro charcuterie board as well as saussies with pickles and mustard that’s served by the quarter metre, for the lovers of meat out there.
