What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners rave about Forest's innovative and flavorful vegetarian cuisine, with many meat-eaters expressing surprise and delight. The atmosphere is frequently praised for being warm, cozy, and intimate. However, some guests have found certain dishes to be unbalanced in flavor, particularly leaning too heavily on sour notes, leading to a less satisfying experience.
"Went to Forest for dinner with a friend the other night and it was such an awesome experience. The restaurant is so beautifully set out and the decor is very intentional and warm. The atmosphere is relaxing and intimate. The food was another level, have not had a meal like that in Auckland in such a long time. Everything was paired beautifully and the vegetables were so fresh. For all you meat eaters that reckon they won’t get full / be impressed - Forest will change your life and open your mind to the world of possibilities. The seaweed dusted fries were surprisingly so good. A highlight was definitely the peach jelly and the feijoa ice cream with watermelon granita! Mega compliments to the chef (talented af) and the lovely front of house ladies who made the experience that much more relaxing and fun. Would definitely be back."

"I had never been to a vegetarian restaurant before and didn’t know what to expect but this was an absolute 10/10 experience.
Amazing food and cocktails, a couple of favorites were the corn nugget taco, the deep fried halloumi, the potato ravioli and the watermelon chilli margarita.
As a meat eater I highly recommend to all as something fun to try.

"My partner and I had been looking forward to trying this restaurant for a long time. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, the lighting was lovely, and the service was great!
We began with the starters: The tomato soup was fantastic, with a delicious tanginess that really stood out. The bread and butter were also very enjoyable, and the fries were crispy and satisfying.
The halloumi dish, in particular, was overwhelmingly sour, it felt like it hadn’t been tasted before leaving the kitchen. It was sour on sour with only a touch of honey, which wasn’t enough to balance it out. The Brussels sprouts were also underwhelming, bland, and paired with an imbalanced amount of stracciatella, leaving them dry and uninteresting.
Dessert was okay but not memorable. The feijoa element was very sour, though the Earl Grey flavour and custard was a nice touch.
The dishes leaned far too heavily into sour flavours, and there wasn’t enough contrast or balance to make them work. While the flavour combinations sounded creative and exciting, the execution fell short and balance of flavours was off.
Edit: I understand it’s a small business and care is taken to provide a good experience. I see there are plenty of other great reviews, this was just our experience and honest reviews are what helps me and others find the restaurants they love."

Auckland's Best New Restaurants & Wine Bars of 2023
Midway through the year, Plabita Florence opened the doors to the newest iteration of her intriguing, plant-based restaurant Forest, taking up residence in a charming space on Dominion Road. Florence maintains her seasonal focus, with an emphasis on sustainable, waste-conscious dining, and as such, you can expect the likes of whole, ‘upside-down broccoli’ or bakery sourdough served warm with ‘old wine butter’.
The Best Auckland Restaurants (Updated 2025)
Serving up the ultimate plant-based fare, not only is Forest the best vegetarian restaurant in Auckland right now, it's also one of Auckland's best restaurants overall. Independently owned by chef Plabita Florence and operated in collaboration with Kate Underwood, every dish is a plateful of art and constantly evolves with the flow of the seasons so you'll want to put this one on rotation. Their deep-fried feijoa season is a highlight of the annual culinary calendar and be sure to wrap your mouth around their beer-glazed purple kumara with marmite cream.

_When this issue went to print, the standout dessert on the menu at Forest was a fantastical sherbet glassful of Kyoho grape sorbet, marigold leaf jelly and grape skin oil — which is, in our opinion, an ideal way to end a meal. The menu at this Dominion Rd restaurant changes regularly, however, so it’s likely they’ve moved on to entirely new dessert options by the time you read this. However, whatever they are, they seem to be consistently served in great stemmed glass bowls and are consistently great to eat.
