Reviews Summary

Diners rave about 5th Street for its exceptional food, particularly the expertly prepared steaks and innovative dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. The service is consistently praised for being attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. The option to order half portions is a unique highlight, allowing guests to explore more of the menu. While the atmosphere is generally loved, it can get busy, making reservations essential for a smooth dining experience.

"Had dinner in the Chef's Bar, was a really great experience, would recommend if available.

Loved the food. All the dishes felt "simple" (in a good way) and very well executed. Excellent sauces with depth and complexity of flavor. Well balanced acidity and fattyness in all dishes. Top notch ingredients are used, be it the fresh fish or the vegetables. It really is an adventure for all your senses to eat here.

Loved talking to the chef (he is also the owner) and seeing the kitchen operated in such an efficient manner and looked like everyone there was having a good time, despite it being a really busy evening. A ton of work is invested in the prep for the service to be so well executed.

Lactose sensitivity was easily catered for.

Really nice that all dishes can be ordered half size.

Will definitely want to come back. By far our best dining experience in 6 weeks of NZ."

"Innovative food. Caters to a variety of tastes and diet types. The sharing plates are the way to go if you have a large group. Quality fresh, local ingredients. The lamb was excellent and I really enjoyed the use of beetroot in their dips.

It can get busy, we had a significant wait even though we did have a booking, but everything else was fantastic.

Decent drink selection. Do try the cocktails, they do a good old fashioned."

Geoff Hancock (Hanktastic)

"The food was amazing! Rustic and flavourful. The beef was done medium rare, and was perfectly seared on the outside and medium rare on the inside. It was tender and very flavourful! The broccolini and potatoes were ordered were half dishes at NZ$14 each. Amazing option offered by the waitress!"

The Best Restaurants and Bars in Christchurch to Visit Now

Run by a bunch of young locals who built the restaurant from scratch, 5th Street is the word on the hospo street for night-time dining excellence. As iconoclastic as Christchurch itself, this warehouse decorated in brocade and greenery hums with the energy of switched-on waiters delivering some of the most exciting food in the city. Our tip: book ahead for a seat at the bar where you can get stuck into sticky fried chicken (finger-lickin’ good in pungent chilli sambal) and charry broccolini on whipped hummus with a punchy black olive salsa (this joint is extremely veg-friendly) while chatting with your friendly local mixologist and sipping a tequild-driven basil cucumber smash.
