What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Speight's Ale House is praised for its excellent atmosphere, generous portions, and delicious pub food, with a particular highlight being the wide selection of tasty beers. While some reviews mention a drop in food quality, many customers have experienced great meals and service, making it a highly recommended spot in Dunedin.
"Stopped in for a beverage before our tour of the brewery...Great atmosphere and beers prices were reasonable. Stopped by for dinner the following day. Food was great and good portions."
Knud Hellested
"An ale house that wears its brewing heritage with pride, right in the heart of Dunedin, New Zealand.
Speight’s is more than just a name. It’s an ale brand rooted deep in tradition, established in 1876 by James Speight, Charles Greenslade, and William Dawson on Rattray Street. Dawson brought the craft, Greenslade the malt, and Speight the business acumen. Together, they built what would soon become the country’s biggest brewery, with their brews making their way across the Tasman and into the islands—Australia, Fiji, Tahiti.
Fast forward to 1999, the Speight’s Ale House was opened: giving longtime fans a place to enjoy the full Speight’s experience. And what a lineup! From the bright, citrusy kick of Summit Citrus to the crisp, well-layered Triple Hop Pilsner, and of course, the bold, unmistakable Distinction Ale—each pour feels like a celebration of Speight’s legacy.
The food? Solid. Think classic, hearty pub fare that keeps things grounded without stealing the spotlight from the beer, which is exactly how it should be. The service is fantastic! Attentive, friendly, and full of that down-to-earth Southern hospitality. It made the whole visit feel that much warmer.
All this, set in a charming two-storey building that echoes the character of the old brewery it once was, complete with that inviting, rustic feel that makes you want to linger just a little longer."

"This Iris bar is good as Google recommended. We ordered 4 main and came with pretty big portions. The beer is also very tasteful."

Restaurants in Dunedin
Authentic and quirky, the Ale House serves as a lively bar in a brewery–restaurant setting. The menu includes a "drunken" steak (steak marinated in dark, malty porter) and tender Merino lamb shank, along with plenty of Speight's ales you can match with your meal. Heavy wood furniture, old brewing equipment, and a huge schist fireplace makes the place feel welcoming.

A good spot to try the full range of Speight’s beers (six/eight beer tastings $18/22); there are also decent pub meals on offer.

While it can't really be called a craft brewery, Speights is a Dunedin beer brand that goes right back to 1876. You can tour the brewery, sample a bunch of great beers and then retire to the Speight's Ale House restaurant for generous helpings of southern hospitality. Ribs, sticky chicken wings, smoked fish cakes, bangers and mash, mussels in white wine cream and lamb shanks are some of the hearty favourites you'll find on the menu.

So, the Speight’s Ale House tour is not usually thought of as the height of romance, but I couldn’t help but feel like I was missing out. Most of my friends did the tour with their parents at some point, but neither of my parents are big drinkers, so I never got to experience the magic of seeing the Pride of the South behind the scenes. Then, like it was fate, I matched with a tinder boy named Gus*.
