A bank vault is guarding the booze at Vault 21, the ‘enfant terrible’ of the Octagon, which has been serving a Chinese-fusion sharing-plate menu since 2015. It’s a former BNZ bank but did an 18-year tour of duty as the Ra Bar before restauranteur Andre Shi bought it. He gutted and extensively renovated the building, using old structural beams as tables, heat-scarred pressed-tin panels (apparently damaged in the infamous Cafe Chantant fire in 1879 which killed 12 people) as wall decoration and the aforementioned vault as a cellar.

You’re never too old to dance and for a wāhine in her naughty forties, it’s always a sure thing to break a few moves after a girls’ night out, at the Vault. By day, this is a yummy Asian-fusion restaurant. By night, it’s more of a party scene, full of students and dance music.

Vault 21 is a controversial club in Dunedin, purely for the fact it has the AUDACITY to charge a door fee. At the time I went, it was full of middle-aged couples, an indication of the fact it was way too early to be in town. But this place is nice, I had no idea.

Lastly, Vault 21 is another excellent option which offers delicious Asian fusion cuisine. However, I will say that you can’t go wrong with food in Dunedin, even cheaper options such as ReBurger will provide you with the best food the city has to offer.

Vault21 never disappoints with a flavour-packed menu spun a little differently to give them an edge. Chow down on the creamy paua wontons, crispy duck tacos or even the pan-fried kumara washed down with one of the signature cocktails.

I mean, they have signature dumplings – how could I not have them on my list?!. Add to that, I found out they are owned by the same lot as Prohibition Smokehouse which I had thoroughly enjoyed earlier in the week.

Touted as Dunedin’s leading Asian-fusion restaurant, conveniently located in the Octagon, Vault 21 offers out-catering solutions that bring an elegant, professional touch to any function or event.

Vault 21 executive chef Greg Pine said the lower Octagon restaurant had sold out of locusts since putting the insects on the menu on Friday.
