Reviews Summary
The Federal Store is a beloved local institution praised for its exceptional service, vibrant retro atmosphere, and delicious brunch offerings. Diners rave about signature dishes like the Eggs Benedict with kumara crisps and the generous portions. While most reviews are overwhelmingly positive, some mention inconsistencies in food quality or coffee preparation.
"Wow! I was in a motel and searched up places to eat.
The Federal Store has extremely prompt and friendly service. Coffee is excellent (I like Americanos).
I ordered eggs benedict with bacon. Very tasty and hearty. Good thing I was starving.
I liked the vibe too - relaxed and well maintained. Strongly recommend this place."

"If I could award more than 5 stars I would. Right from the moment you walk in everything works, friendly, smiling, and ready to help Team. The brunch was outstanding and the cabinet food looked amazing. Going back tomorrow for the cakes oh and brunch again. Even when leaving the Team were friendly, asked how everything was and said goodbye with a smile and have a great day attitude. The food, portion size, and price point were excellent. The atmosphere matches everything else about the place, fun, quirky and beach batch style. You guessed it, I can’t say enough good about Federal Store and the whole Team including the very hard working and visible Team in the kitchen. Thanks everyone and see you again tomorrow."

"Rolled in there for the first time in a year, waited 45 minutes in a nearly empty restaurant to be served some stale non salted chips and a greasy halloumi burger with a mushroom sandwiched between two soggy yet charcolled brioche buns all for a sum total of $28. Usually pretty sweet but I’m guessing new owners. Service from waitress was good but all in all standards have dropped there and food was low tier compared to how it was a year ago."

A Weekender's Guide to New Plymouth
The eatery is the go-to for young locals looking for caffeine assistance on the weekend morning. This particular visit it was heaving and was even witness to a pregnancy announcement. In line with the decor the food is predominantly 'American diner', offering delights like a brunch quesadilla topped with beans and two fried eggs, huevos rancheros that come with tortillas, spicy beans, bacon, and relish, and a beef and bacon burger with slaw and curly fries.

Unusual Cafes - The Curious Kiwi
My first visit to The Federal Store was during the WOMAD Festival and it was packed to bursting. Returning to New Plymouth a few months later, we found the cafe just as popular on a sunny Sunday afternoon when we called in for coffee and cake. There are touches of the 50's throughout like the vintage style aprons and head scarves worn by some of the staff, a Tip Top mural, and paper bunting.

At the Federal Store in Strandon, we enjoy a cozy and friendly spot for coffee, breakfast, or lunch. The indoor seating options offer a relaxed, friendly environment, although we often sit outdoors on lovely sunny days. We mostly come here for morning coffee, but recently, I tried the gluten-free avocado on toast, which was fabulous, topped with cherry tomatoes and a perfectly poached egg.
