It’s been a while since I pulled up a fireside seat at the original Eichardt’s Bar. On this sunny but crisp afternoon, the fireplace was a welcome draw card for a couple of tipsy birds looking for a warm place to roost prior to our dinner plans. Alongside an extensive menu of local wines and unique cocktails, the team here have always been known for their ability to craft a decent mulled wine.

One of the first gold mining hotels in Queenstown, those weary gold prospectors wouldn’t recognise Eichardt’s Bar now, transformed as it is into a luxurious haven overlooking the lake. Come for high tea by the fire and stay for whisky tastings at sunset, to explore the masterful cocktail list, or simply to toast the view with a crisp glass of Bollinger champagne.

From a woolshed on the shores of Lake Wakatipu to a luxury hotel. The history of this building goes right back to when Queenstown was originally settled in 1862 by William Gilbert Rees. In early 1866, Rees entered into partnership with Albert Eichardt, who went on to become the sole proprietor of the hotel by 1869.
