Patagonia Chocolates

Owned by a local Argentine couple who missed the desserts of their homeland, Patagonia is the best place around to buy ice cream, chocolates, cakes, and other sweets. They have locations in Queenstown and Wanaka, too.

Get some takeaway coffee from The Dishery or Wolf Coffee (if you can, bring a reusable cup with you), ice cream from Patagonia Chocolates, or takeaways from Hole in One Café, Fergbutcher, The Clubhouse Kitchen or a picnic from Rosie’s Plate. The open-air Arrowtown Memorial Pool is ideal for those keen to do a few laps, or head to nearby Lake Hayes (Waiwhakaata) for a play and swim in the warm-ish water. The water isn’t glacier-fed so the water gets quite warm in summer and it is also a peaceful option as it isn’t used by jetboats and water skiers.

If you’ve seen photos of your friends on holiday with some of the most delicious looking ice creams you could imagine, they were probably visiting Patagonia. With some of the best ice cream in the area, it's a no brainer to stop by either their Arrowtown store or Queenstown (smaller ques in Arrowtown though!) Locally owned and just so delicious. Pop in and sample flavours for free and then grab a scoop of your favourite, if you’re a banana bread lover I can’t go past the Banana Split - it’s like eating cake batter and ice cream all in one!

What started as a small chocolate shop in Arrowtown has grown into five illustrious cafes around the Southern Lakes region. Visiting in summer, no problem, they have a great selection of award winning ice cream and sorbet in the most delicious and unique flavors to choose from. They also have handmade artisan chocolates which are great in any season. I always bring some home as gifts and they are a big hit.

Patagonia Chocolates was founded in 2005 by Argentinian-born owners Lorena Giallonardo and Alex Gimenez. They felt New Zealand was missing out on the awesome chocolate so famous in their homeland. In fact, their very first cafe was right here in Arrowtown.
