Reviews Summary

Kika garners significant praise for its 'Just Feed Me' tasting menu, offering a delightful culinary journey with creative flavor combinations, especially from the salmon and beef short rib dishes. Diners also appreciate the cozy ambiance, particularly the open fire in winter, and the warm, friendly service. However, some guests have expressed disappointment with the 'Just Feed Me' option, citing a lack of coherence in dishes or overcooked ingredients, and a few have noted that the service could be more attentive given the price point.

"Fantastic taster menu.

We went for the "Just Feed Me" option and it was awesome.
Every dish was delicious and full of character. You could really see the thought that had gone into the different combinations of flavours.

The salmon and beef short rib were the best but everything was great!

Service, drinks and atmosphere where also fantastic. Would definitely recommend!"

Phil Reynolds

"I had dinner at Kika Wakana tonight, with a booking at 8:15 PM, and have just left the restaurant. Our group of six chose the “Just Feed Me” menu ($95 per person), which meant we had no prior knowledge of the dishes we would be served, as everything was left entirely to the chef’s selection and creativity.

We were genuinely looking forward to a delightful dining experience, but unfortunately, we were left completely disappointed. The sequence of dishes lacked coherence in terms of flavor, and there seemed to be no thoughtful flow or connection between them.

Most notably, the lamb dish, which was intended to be the highlight of the meal, was also the worst. Although it was supposed to be slow-cooked, it was then over-roasted, resulting in meat that was both dry and tough. The accompanying roasted potatoes were also overcooked, making them dry and hard—almost inedible.

It felt as though, because we were one of the last bookings of the evening and had chosen the “Just Feed Me” menu, the kitchen simply served us whatever was left.

Please respect the palate of your guests. We chose the “Just Feed Me” option because we trusted the chef’s taste and creativity—not because we wanted to be randomly stuffed with whatever was available.

I strongly recommend others think carefully before choosing the “Just Feed Me” menu.

I am giving this feedback 1 star, as there’s no option for half a star."

Trang Huynh

"We went for just feed me option and order 3 more oysters with beer. The waitress offered us a little sample of beer before ordering one which was helpful. The food was generally good but does it worth the price and 2 hats? I’m not sure."

乐天的静: "Having heard so many good reviews from friends, we came to Kika with high expectations, plus, just this week, it was named the top 100 restaurant in New Zealand and the only restaurant on Wanaka’s list. We weren’t disappointed. Soon, we decided to go to the chef's choice of "Just Feed Me" because we couldn't decide from the menu! We also chose the paired wine. I have nothing to say, each dish was amazingly great, the portion was sufficient, and the wines were perfect. Service was excellent, food arrived soon and the restaurant was full. We lived in Wanaka and didn’t believe we had our first visit here for so long, we would definitely come back and highly recommend this restaurant.

A Weekender's Guide to Wanaka

Kika is the kind of restaurant that would be ideal for a visit in the heart of winter; sitting in front of the open hearth fire, nursing a glass of Central Otago pinot noir and chowing down on the head-size portion of lamb shoulder. It's just as romantic in the warmer seasons and the entire menu lends itself very well to sharing— unless you'd prefer to tackle that mammoth hunk of lamb by yourself. For the indecisive, the restaurant also offers a 'Just Feed Me' option where you can leave your dining destiny in the hands of the chef.
