What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Scroggin Coffee and Eatery is praised for its delicious food, high-quality coffee, and cozy, Scandi-inspired atmosphere, making it a standout cafe in Wanaka. While many enjoy the inventive menu and friendly service, some reviews mention inconsistencies in food preparation and less than stellar coffee experiences.
"What a delicious cheesy scone !! Yummy.
Great coffee. Love the vibe. It was a bit noisy for my breakfast buddy but just fine for me.
Can highly recommend this place !"

"Lovely setting and quick service but our waffles were super dense and crunchy and I found the toppings didn’t work that well together (chocolate, orange and berries which came from frozen so bit mushy). My mum enjoyed it but hers was also overcooked! Coffee was nice but mums tea was anaemic (not enough tea leaves used)."
Anastasia Davis
"Definitely stop in at Scroggin if you’re in the area! 🍴 The food was a real standout — I had the one hander and the banana bread, and both were delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were warm and welcoming, which really added to the relaxed, friendly vibe of the place.
All in all, a great spot with tasty food and good energy. Highly recommend for a casual meal or a coffee break! 🌟"

Most activity hums along the southern edge of the area's eponymous glacial lake, where a tidy township of cafés, boutiques, and wine bars echoes the pockets of quiet sophistication found in cities like Wellington and Auckland. You could spend a morning sifting through boutiques like 47 Frocks, which stocks homegrown labels like Zambesi, known for its asymmetrical, funky silhouettes, and the very cool Deadly Ponies accessories brand. A good spot for lunch is Scroggin Coffee and Eatery, a standout among Wānaka's high-end café scene with a cheery vibe and an abundance of blond wood.

The coffee is supplied by Flight, and includes filter and cold brew options alongside delicious espresso. The all-day menu has you covered with a mix of fresh, savoury breakfast options, like the Green Breaky Bowl or Shakshuka (poached eggs served atop curry tomato & capsicum sauce, butter beans and pesto, topped with Raglan coconut yoghurt or housemate labneh), to tried-and-true classics like a Reuben or grilled cheese.
Spring in Wānaka: From Where To Eat and Shop to Exploring the Outdoors
Inspired by owner Lucy Conway’s passion for quality coffee and time in the mountains, the cafe is a tasteful, wood-lined ode to the back-country hut. The food is far from camping fare, though, with a seasonal menu that’s detailed and inventive. Order scrambled tofu on toast with greens and walnut-date butter, or the classic “one-hander” milk bun with bacon or sausage, egg, cheddar and sauce.
