What was once a car park on Dixon Street is now a bustling brunch spot by one of Wellington’s third-wave coffee roasters, Flight Coffee. Serving up their freshly-roasted coffee in whatever format you take it - from espresso to pour-over and filter alongside a seasonal brunch menu that covers all of the modern classics from granola to eggs to breakfast tacos. For coffee lovers, you won't want to miss the tasting flight of coffee.

First off – I love cafes which offer sparkling water at no cost. The staff at Flight Hangar are lovely and personable and are helpful in interpreting the menu and deciding between coffee blends. As a pescatarian who’s normally on a budget, I thought the Truffled Eggs with Mushrooms on gluten free bread was pretty good, however I’ve heard a discerning foodie describe the Spiced Pork Benedict as the best thing they’ve ever eaten.

The Hangar is where you can experience Flight Coffee in all it’s glory. It’s one of the newer ones on the scene of Wellington cafes and has hit the ground running. Since it comes from the same people who brought you the Memphis Belle Coffee House (an award winning Wellington cafe) you know it’s got to be good and The Hangar lives up to the reputation of its founders.

Richard Corney, Matt Graylee and Nick Clark founded Flight Coffee in 2009 with the express purpose of improving the roasting and sourcing of coffee in Aotearoa. Flight now has coffee farms in South America and research and training centres back in New Zealand, but to truly get a sense of what Flight Coffee has achieved, head to its flagship Te Aro venue, the Hangar.

The Hangar started as a place for Flight Coffee to geek out on coffee roasting with friends, and eventually expanded to a fully-fledged eatery when coffee operations expanded to Garrett Street. Build your own ciabatta sandwich of brekky dreams (ft. Eastbourne Butcher’s local thick-cut bacon) or set yourself up for the day with a Moroccan lamb shoulder eggs benny.

Wellington is also known as one of the coffee cities of the world, so be sure to get your caffeine fix at cafes like Customs Brew Bar, The Flight Coffee Hangar and Leeds St Bakery. Just outside the city, the famous Red Rocks Reserve is a short 30 minute drive away – check out this enigmatic coastal marvel and keep your eyes peeled for some furry seals!

They specialise in espresso-based drinks, but the barista whips up awesome filter coffee too–my favourite being the fruity Kintamani blend. I also suggest you try their coffee tasting flights, which are consistently tasty (yes, I’ve tried all four!).

Flight Coffee's flagship café, The Hangar, was on my list almost as soon as I started my antipodean coffee research. They came to my attention during the great Wush Wush rush of 2017, and I visited The Hangar twice during my visit. The first time, Tim and I stopped by for an afternoon coffee.

If you take your coffee very seriously, find your way to Customs, Fidel's Café, Swimsuit, Seashore Cabaret, Caffe L'affare or the Flight Coffee Hangar. If you're feeling experimental, Evil Twins and Pour & Twist are known for superfood lattes featuring ingredients like matcha and turmeric.
