Reviews Summary

Fisketorget Stavanger is celebrated for its incredibly fresh seafood and its iconic fish soup, often lauded as a must-try Norwegian classic. Diners appreciate the vibrant market atmosphere and the high quality of the daily catch. However, some find the restaurant to be overpriced for the portion sizes, and a few have noted a lack of non-seafood options for picky eaters.

"Great range of fresh seafood. I ordered catch of the day and oysters. Unfortunately, there is no options for people who don’t like fish. One of our kid does not like it at all and we asked for pasta with some cheese for him. It wasn’t really tasty. So, the restaurant is a great place to eat for fish lovers only."

Iuliia Ternova

"There was a queue, but it moved quickly, and we got a table for two in no time.

Portions here are very big! Huge thanks to the waiter who suggested the starter-size soup, it was the perfect amount and helped avoid wasting food.

The soup was fantastic. The salmon salad was huge, though the mango wasn’t ripe, which affected the flavor a bit. The daily fish was cooked perfectly. I also really liked the variety of non-alcoholic drinks, especially the local cider.

Overall, a good spot. Friendly service, pretty good food and big portions."

Yuliia Pashentseva

"With this one pre-book is needed since it is always full. We ordered Norwegian tuna, catch of the day, and straight from the sea. They were all delicious. Highly recommend. The plum dessert was not really my thing because I didn’t like the texture of the chocolate crumb."

10 Best Restaurants In Stavanger

Norway being Norway, almost every city has its own fish market (fisketorget) by the port. And in many of them, there’s also some kind of eatery operating on the premises. Stavanger is no different: Fisketorget comprises a seafood counter and a restaurant helmed by chef Karl Erik Pallesen, where you can bet the fish you’re eating is coming straight from the fishermen’s boats.

How to plan a weekend in Stavanger, where Norway's fjords collide with urban charm

Stop at Fisketorget in the Vågen harbour for an early al fresco lunch. The menu reflects the day’s catch, but fishcakes and shrimp sandwiches are delicious staples. Out front, you’ll notice a sea-facing steel sculpture; Stavanger has 23, all based on a cast of sculptor Antony Gormley.

Where to Eat in Stavanger, Norway: Surprise Foodie Destination

Located right on the water’s edge, Fisketorget is part fish market (its literal translation) and part restaurant serving up local fish and seafood specialties. For me, this was Norwegian comfort food in a beautiful locale, with plenty of beer and wine options to pair with your food. While looking out over the nearby inlet, I enjoyed a giant bowl of Norwegian specialty fiskesuppe for lunch, a hearty fish soup which had delicious flavors and lots of different type of seafood – the perfect cozy indulgence to warm me up on a chilly day.

Could we tempt you with Stavanger’s most famous fish soup at the restaurant at the fish market, Fisketorget, a short walk from IDDIS The Norwegian Printing Museum and The Norwegian Canning Museum?. Or, perhaps do it like the locals, eat a hot fishcake on the go from the fish market as you’re walking towards your next destination. Further, on your must-see list, is the Stavanger city park, Byparken, where you can, steps left permitting, stroll around the city lake and catch a small breather on one of the park benches.

Eating in Stavanger Norway and Our Hotel

The market itself has a huge, wonderful selection of day-old fish and crustaceans fresh from the ocean. Although we salivated over the lobsters and the king crab legs that were for sale, neither was on the adjoining restaurant’s menu. We were, however, very pleased with each of our three choices: fish soup with shrimp, trout, salmon, and croutons in a milk-based soup, mussels steamed in white wine, and grilled ling cod with cabbage, carrot, turnip, and potato in cream sauce—all with a bottle of Chablis 1er Cru.

What to buy in Norway - Best souvenirs

For example, in the market of the port of Bergen and in the market of Oslo, the Fisketorget, where you can find a great variety of fish, from trays of salmon to whale meat, as well as seafood. Also in the Stavanger, there is great variety, although here we recommend buying sardines. The price of these markets is somewhat higher than that of supermarkets, so if your budget is limited you can always go to a Kiwi and Rema 1000 supermarket.

There are several prix-fixe options to choose among, starting from NOK810 for 3 courses (September 2024), and the items on the menu changes daily, depending on the catch of the day. Though, there are also some permanent items on the menu, including fish soup, and the mussels in green curry and coconut milk, which are both a must-order if you go.

Catch of the day” is what it’s all about at Fisketorget (i.e. The Fish Market). Yes, this is an actual fish market, but in conjunction with it lies a wonderful restaurant, serving whatever is at hand on any given day. There are two “classics” on the menu, Fisketorget’s unforgettable open shrimp sandwich and its’ lovely fish soup, as well as an everchanging à la carte menu with the freshest seafood available.

My 9 Favorite Things to Do in Stavanger, Norway

If you want my truthful opinion, a trip to Norway without eating seafood is a trip wasted. Like the rest of the country, Stavanger is a fantastic place to enjoy some freshly caught fish; if you only go to one restaurant while you’re in town, I strongly recommend visiting Fisketorget. The menu changes depending on the season; I had a really good fish soup when I was there, which I can 100% recommend.

Prismessig spenner menyene fra dagens 3-retter som koster 486 kroner til dagens 6-retter som fisker 719 kroner ut av lommeboka. I tillegg kan du få smaksmenyen "Litt av alt" som er en 5-retter til 469 kroner.

Best places to go Stavanger

A popular option that I would say is worth it, is the famous Fisketorget fish market which has an attached restaurant. One of Norway’s traditional dishes to try is fish soup (fiskesuppe), and the version at this location is a modern twist that’s hailed as the best by….many. It was definitely tasty and worth a try if you’re curious!.

You need to make a reservation but it's not typically a big deal if you plan a week out. I usually go for the a la carte since I prefer just having a glass of red wine with a big bowl of their fish soup and sour dough bread / whipped butter. That's the reason to go right?
