With just the opposite vibe of Emmas, the brand-new Full Steam restaurant occupies one of the city’s cavernous old wharf warehouses that date from the late-19th/early-20th century. The entire back of the building, whose original name was the Bangsund building, is essentially a museum, filled as it is with vintage tools of the trade in the cod and stockfish industry upon which much of the Norwegian economy was once built—from fishing boats to cod liver oil production (no surprise perhaps, as the proprietor comes from the fishing center of Lofoten). First timers to Tromsø must sample both the delicacies of fried cod tongue and cod caviar.

Full Steam ble etablert i 2018 og ligger fantastisk til på den gamle Bangsundbrygga i Tromsø, som før i tiden fungerte som byens fiskerimottak. Her får gjestene mer enn et godt måltid – de kan også oppleve den rike nord-norske fiskerihistorien på nært hold. Restauranten er innredet som en levende utstilling, og gjennom små fortellinger får man innblikk i skreifiskets historie i de nordligste fylkene, og ikke minst i tørrfisken og tranens viktige rolle.

Full Steam was the restaurant that we had a snack after the cruise through the fjords, the building had already served years ago as a base for fishermen and for that reason it still houses a museum about the fishing culture in Norway in the back. Their menu has many typical dishes like cod and seafood. We ate a shrimp salad sandwich that had ‘thousands’ of shrimp and we also tried the waffle with the local selection of cheese and jams.

Full Steam ble etablert i 2018 og har lokalitet på Bangsundbrygga i Tromsø. Bangsundbrygga ble bygd i 1902 og var da et fiskemottak/fabrikk. Bygget er velholdt og kommet til sitt rette element med tilbudet som Full Steam gir; storytelling om den eldre fiskerihistorie i Tromsregionen og matservering basert på lokale sjømatsråvarer.

Full Steam is an eclectic restaurant full of interesting artifacts inspired by the fishing history of the area. It’s a small menu, and they originally told me they were unable to accommodate a vegetarian. However, they ended up serving me a vegetarian version of their popular fish cakes dish, which was quite delicious.

If you’re vegetarian, or travelling to Tromsø with vegetarians, be aware that not every restaurant will have options for you. And some will only have one or two (which I don’t mind). We booked a table at Full Steam for dinner on a Saturday night because it was highly rated and had things I could eat.
