Get the lunch of the day at Mathallen, easily the best deal in all of Tromso!. I spent 99 NOK on this really tasty fish gratin — I promise it was much better tasting than the picture suggests — with buttery baby potatoes and a sweet carrot salad. It’s much more expensive to eat there at night — we’re talking tasting menus that run between 700-900 NOK, (~$80-100 USD) — so this is a fantastic deal given the quality of food at Mathallen.

With seafood pulled fresh from the freezing waters of the Arctic each day, they create seasonal and traditional Norweigan meals with modern twists. On my hit list: salmon, herring, and sour milk ice cream.

Mathallen is another very typical restaurant with a menu like Emma’s but with a more modern feel. Unfortunately, we ended up not being able to try it, we left it for the last day and then we found out that they didn’t open on Sundays. Looks like a very good option and was highly recommended in the research we did.

On our first night in Tromsø we went for dinner at Mathallen. A highly rated kitchen near the centre of town. The restaurant had a modern and relaxed vibe with low lighting, dark walls, and wooden furniture.

The best restaurants for reindeer and fish are Bardus (at Cora Sandels gate 4), Mathallen (Grønnegata 60) and Hildr Gastro Bar (Skippergata 11), although naturally, they’re all a bit on the pricey side.
