There’s a lovely restaurant at the top of Fjellheisen but our modest budget did not stretch to that, so we headed back into the centre of Tromso to a great little kiosk called ‘Raketten Bar & Pølse’, which claimed to be the smallest bar in the world and also sold the most delicious reindeer hotdogs. I’m very much a ‘when in Rome’ person, so I washed my reindeer hotdog down with mulled wine. The kids didn’t fancy reindeer, particularly following the tasteless Rudolph jokes by my unhelpful husband, so they just opted for pork hotdogs.

Known as the “home of the best hot dogs in the world (according to guests) and the tiniest bar in the universe (according to aliens)”, Raketten is a small, one-person hot dog stand in the center of Tromsø. With a limited menu (veg or reindeer), homemade ciabatta buns, and toppings (fried or raw onions, beets), I absolutely fell in love with this spot for its quirkiness and honestly awesome hot dogs.

While you’re walking around downtown Tromsø, you’ll eventually come across this tiny building that stands out from every other building. This extremely tiny but mighty storefront is home to some of the best hotdogs in Northern Norway. You can grab a bite to eat, but it’s also known as the smallest bar in the world (or universe, depending on who you ask).

The small yellow kiosk looks like rocket (hence the name ‘ raketten‘ which means ‘ the rocket‘ in Norwegian).

You can’t help but have this little hodog stall catch your attention while walking through the high street. There are lots of sausages to choose from and even more toppings on offer to personalise your chosen hotdog (I suggest loading up on as many as your server can fit on)!. By far the cheapest eat in Tromsø.

Advertised as the smallest bar in town, Raketten Bar & Pølse stands smack dab in the middle of Tromsø’s main square. With a charming yellow building and a fire pit, there is always a line here. Offering a variety of hot and cold drinks plus hot dogs, this is a great place to pop by for a midday pick-me-up.

On the other end of the town highlight spectrum is a tiny institution, a mere kiosk called Raketten for its vague shape as a rocket. The kiosk was built in 1911 as a newsstand, and thankfully survived the 60s fire. Today, it is where you will sample what undoubtedly is your first ever reindeer hotdog.

Winning the silver medal on our restaurant tour is Raketten. It is a hot-dog kiosk, but what a hot-dog kiosk!. This small building serves such good food and has been such a mainstay to the community over the decades that the powers that be designated it an Important Cultural Monument.

As we meander through the city, you'll sample a variety of local delicacies, including the renowned hot dogs at Raketten Bar and authentic Norwegian fish cakes at Dragøy. Along the way, we'll collect a selection of samples to enjoy at our historic dining room.

Also worth a visit is Raketten, a tiny kiosk that doubles as Norway’s smallest bar. At only 4 sqm, it’s situated on the market square called Stortorget, and is a popular spot for beer and hot dogs on Friday nights.

There are also some takeaway spots where you can get some cheap(er) food, like Raketten Bar & Pølse where you can get reindeer sausages for about 60 NOK ($5 USD). There’s always a line though.
