What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners rave about Al Toke Pez for its incredibly fresh and authentic Peruvian ceviche and seafood, often highlighting the excellent value and generous portions. The 'Combinado' platter is frequently recommended for its satisfying mix of flavors. While some find the intimate setting and quick service charming, a few reviewers have noted less-than-friendly staff and a less than pristine environment in the past.
"Peru never disappoints when it comes to food!! You gotta wait in line to get in but it’s so worth it and never in my life have I ate so good until I went to Peru and I found out what real food tastes like! This place is amazing, I love the atmosphere and the food is delicious and I’ve never had something like it in my life. 1000% recommend 😫"

"After all the hype over the years about this place, we finally made it there. Dirty, rundown, even the staff were disheveled and grimy. The chef and waitress were both dour, unfriendly, and barely communicated more than a monosyllable when asked a question. And easily the worst ceviche we've ever had in Peru."

"Ceviche de pescado was delicious, trio as well. Such a great place with fresh ingredients for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend to visit for lunch 🤤🦐🐟"

Al Toke Pez is a hole in the wall in the Surquillo area that’s become an institution in Lima as a place to get the city’s best leche de tigre–which is the citrusy, oniony, spicy, salty juice left behind after you marinate ceviche. People line up here to get styrofoam cups full of leche de tigre garnished with a bit of ceviche, sliced red onion, and a few strips of lightly fried fish. This bracing, tender, crunchy, slurpy delight is sublime and many locals also consider it the best cure for a hangover, fyi.

This one is bigger and more formal, though with a similar menu that includes Tomás Matsufuji’s sudados, ceviches, fried seafood, and other plates. The prices remain extremely accessible.
