One fine day 5 friends got together with the same dream, open a restaurant that reflects those homemade flavors of traditional Peruvian cuisines with a touch of modernity, in a sustainable and cozy place where spend a nice time with friends and family. This is how Cosmo came to be and the 5 friends were Alvaro Raffo, Juan Lengua, Guillermo Lohmann, and James Berckemeyer, the last main chef of the restaurant. Like the majority of recognized Peruvian chefs, James worked for many years at Astrid & Gaston, before opening Cosme.

A Lima-based restaurant that prides itself on Peruvian “comfort food” using sustainable practices and seasonal products is Cosme. I wasn’t able to visit this one in person due to a last minute schedule change when I was in Lima, but I’m happy to share that Cosme’s menu includes a few vegan, and inherently dairy-free, options. Additionally, I found only positive allergy-related comments in the restaurant’s online reviews, all of which commended the restaurant for its helpful accommodations and knowledgable staff.

Between Friday night and Monday noon, I was going to visit: Kjolle, number 28 on the list; Maido, number 6; Mayta, number 27; Cosme, number 69 (in the Latin America's version) and Alado, not yet in the list but most probably, soon to be. I was going to spend more time sitting at a restaurant than doing anything else, but isn't this the dream of any food journalist and sommelier like me?

After a research rabbit hole 🤪, I decided the restaurants ranked among the top 100 I would visit would be La Mar, Cosme and Isolina. I filled in other dinners with great down-to-earth Peruvian institutions around the Barranco neighborhood. There is so much to share so let’s dive right into Lima’s most delicious eats!

COSME is a restaurant, and not an ice cream spot, but I had to include their mint chocolate ice cream ‘paleta’ on my list. It is so delicious and full of flavour and probably one of my favourite restaurant desserts. The mix of chocolate and mint is always a winner and it’s just so beautifully presented.

This casual gem is able to pull off a rare compromise between cost and style. While not in Miraflores proper, Cosme is situated in the nearby district of San Isidro and is worth traveling to. The pricing is affordable even while the food is innovative, high quality and, dare we say, hip.
