What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Santini is celebrated for its historic charm and exceptionally flavorful gelato, with many praising the unique taste and friendly service. However, some find the gelato overly sweet with limited options for dietary restrictions, and a few reviews mention inconsistency in quality or service.
"the original store! The ice cream is still excellent even though Santini went very multi-branch over the last few years. Recommended. (22/06/2025)"

"Classic spot, but overly sweet and limited options.
Santini has an old-world charm that definitely feels nostalgic, and it’s clear the place has a long-standing reputation in Cascais.
The interior is clean and well kept, and the staff were friendly and efficient. It’s the kind of place people remember from childhood vacations, so it has a loyal following.
That said, the gelato itself was a a letdown. It was much sweeter than expected, and the flavors didn’t really stand out. It lacked the depth and richness you’d find in more modern gelaterias. It felt more sugary than flavorful, and after a few bites, it became too much.
They also had very few options for people with dietary restrictions. There were only a couple of sorbet-type flavors for those avoiding lactose, and none of them were particularly exciting. If you’re used to places that offer almond or coconut-based alternatives, this might feel limited.
It’s worth trying if you’re nearby and curious about a local institution, but if you’re looking for bold flavors or lactose-free choices, there are better spots in Cascais."

"4.3/5
Santini is a place whose menu includes the best chocolate cake in the world. That's the name of the cake in menu, which turns out not to be the best chocolate cake in the world (in my opinion), but it certainly tastes like it aspires to the top.
The ice creams, on the other hand, have very intense and interesting flavors, which is undoubtedly a strong point of this place."

Restaurants in Cascais and Boca do Inferno
In the heart of old-town Cascais, Santini Cascais has what many people consider to be the country's best Italian-style gelato. Branches have now opened across Lisbon and in Porto, but Santini Cascais is where it all began when Attilio Santini opened his ice cream parlor on the beach back in 1949.
TimeOut Market
The market will feature some of Lisbon’s finest restaurants, from Chefs Alexandre Silva, Vítor Claro, Miguel Castro Silva, Henrique Sá Pessoa or Marlene Vieira to well-known stores like Conserveira Nacional and Garrafeira Nacional as well as Arcádia (one of the oldest chocolatiers in Portugal, founded in the 1930s in the city of Porto, which still makes some of the best chocolates in the country), Santini (probably the best ice-cream in the world! Our favourite flavour is Strawberry, you really can’t beat the classics), Monte Mar (one of the most well-known seafood restaurants in Lisbon, that so far had only one location, in Cascais by Guincho beach, so it’s incredibly exciting that we’ll be able to taste some of the best seafood in the country in another location) and the new ones that are making an impression around Lisbon such as Sea Me, Honorato (one of the first burger restaurants to take advantage of the burger craze in Lisbon, with some of the coolest burgers in town), Prego da Peixaria (some absolutely delicious steak sandwiches, as well as the more modern salmon or tuna sandwiches – delicious) or Confraria (already a classic in Cascais, this sushi place makes unbelievably good lime nigiri, among some of the best sushi in Lisbon).
Why Sausalito's Scenic Sister City in Portugal, Cascais, Should Be Your Next International Destination
We finish the evening by following the directions of enthusiastic locals to the red-striped awnings of Gelados Santini, founded in 1949 by Italian immigrants. Raising our cones of melon sorbet and bitter chocolate gelato, we raise an ice cream salute to Cascais, the perfect home base for a sampling of Portugal, and a worthy sister city to our beloved Sausalito back home.
