Reviews Summary

Dom Joaquim is highly praised for its exceptional traditional Alentejo cuisine and attentive service, offering a refined dining experience that blends classic recipes with innovative techniques. While most diners rave about the delicious food and knowledgeable staff, a few have noted potential language barriers or higher price points for the quality.

"The food was very good but a language barrier caused an issue with one of our orders. Something lost in the communication with our server. Server removed a sauce from an order when NO such instructions were given. We simply pointed to the entrees we wanted on the menu."

Larry Benrus

"Delicious food and good service. The octopus and the dogfight soup were sublime and the migas with pork was excellent as well."

Vishal Merani

"Good traditional restaurant within the walls of Évora. The pork cheek dish is amazing and a must try here. Other dishes like the octopus and some appetizers are also nice but nothing beats the pork cheeks. Very good wine options and also several typical desserts worth tasting. Reservations are strongly recommended and they accept credit card payments. The staff was great"

Évora, Portugal Travel Guide

A favorite of travelers and native Eborenses, Dom Joaquim specializes in traditional regional cuisine. The space — like the food itself — is a taste of home (if your grandmother happens to be a fantastic chef from Alentejo). Patrons devour plates of black pork and leg of lamb in a dining room where stone walls are ornamented with iron sculptures and bottles of local wine.

Dom Joaquim, Evora

As it happens, we were supposed to be dining somewhere else that night and, having put on our posh frocks and driven out of our way only to be completely let down by the venue, we decided to hightail it to Evora, the nearest place that would surely have something still taking reservations at 7.30pm. And thank goodness for the Michelin Guide!. Dressed to the nines, in temperatures soaring at 30 degrees even at that time of night, we turned up on the doorstep of Dom Joaquim having been told we may need to wait a while for a table.

Holly Carpenter in Alentejo: Peace and adventure in Portugal's 'bread basket'

Evora reached its golden age in the 15th Century when it became the residence for Portugal's monarchs - and we were served up a meal fit for a king that night at the Dom Joaquim restaurant. I sampled prawn pil-pil for starters and tried some migas, a regional mashed bread dish, then a platter of desserts which were so fresh and mind-blowingly tasty. We washed down the feast with a number of Alentejan wines, my favourite a full-bodied Vinhas Velhas red blended from Trincadeira, Aragonez and Alicante Bouschet grapes.

For a rustic menu, try the simple, traditional dishes at Dom Joaquim (00 351 266 731 105). Dogfish paired with chickpeas and olive oil and boiled eggs in mayonnaise is served immediately but be sure to order a mini chicken pie (the taste is unlike any other you’ve tried), and the black pork with sweet potato.
