The best seats in this intimate restaurant are at the counter in front of the open kitchen, where you can watch the talented young chefs work their magic with local seafood. Though there are a couple of meat items on the menu, fish is the star, with complex yet delicious flavors and beautiful presentations. Both the small plates as well as the more substantial fish and rice dishes are perfect for sharing.

Kampo is one of three venues run by chef Julio Pereira (the others are Akua, which specialises in fish, and the bakery Kôdea). The focus at Kampo is meat. You can marvel at dry-aged T-bones in temperature-controlled vitrines on your way in.

Longtime Madeira resident Júlio Pereira has dedicated himself to researching the island’s gastronomic history and translating it into simple, elegant restaurant experiences. After his success with Kampo (still a good bet), the chef opened Ákua in Funchal, a love letter to fish and seafood that also draws on his childhood memories growing up in a fishing village on the Portuguese mainland. He calls Ákua a “street restaurant” where the flavors of the sea combine with products from the (is)land.

Like Kampo, Akua presents traditional ingredients in innovative ways, making it a top choice for diners who are tired of the usual grilled fish and limpets found across the city.

Known for its spectacular seafood, Akua has been dubbed one of the best places to dine in Funchal. The restaurant received a Tripadvisor Travellers Choice award last year and it’s easy to see why!. Chef Júlio Pereira explores the flavours of Portugal in his own unique way, offering fried codfish tacos, white fish ceviche and mussels in a Jaipur sauce.

Júlio Pereira’s second venture does not disappoint either, with Akua specialising in fish rather than in meat. We tried the Asian fusion-style tuna tataki cones, fish tacos, Peruvian ceviche and fideua – a medley of seafood with squid ink pasta and aioli. Both restaurants had lovely wine selections as well.

As you can guess with the name, at the menu you find a large choice of fresh and tasty fish and seafood. For the starter, we didn’t hesitate and choose a seafood ceviche. And for our main dish we tried a tuna steak with clames risotto and the fish and seafood fideua, the Portuguese equivalent to the paella.

If you’re there with a small group I highly recommend getting all the different starters to share. They’ve put a lot of thought into the menu and the dishes were very surprising!. We went back 3 times, because of how good it was.

Aan ondernemerschap ontbreekt het chef-kok Júlio Pereira niet. Naast Kampo is hij ook eigenaar van restaurant Akua aan de Rua Dos Murcas. Akua is gespecialiseerd in visgerechten, maar je kunt er ook vlees of vegetarisch eten.

We were there for lunch once again, lucky as we had not pre-booked. They also have an open-concept kitchen, but we were sitting outside, which was great. The food is simple and tastes delicious.

Akua - high end beautiful small plates as well as entrees and a full course meal option. We just had appetizers and loved everything we tried. They offer inside and outside seating.

One of the mistakes we first made was try to go to nice restaurants in Funchal, like Akua and Taberna do Capitao. Honestly, it was a waste of time. Akua had amazing bread.
