What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Armazém do Sal offers an elegant dining experience with impeccable service and a beautiful setting in a former salt warehouse. While many praise the attentive and friendly staff, as well as the artistic presentation of the food, some reviews mention that the food, while cooked well, can lack distinct flavor or not live up to expectations for its price point, with occasional service lapses noted.
"Had a lovely meal with the family while on vacation. There was live saxophone music with classics like Your Song and Yesterday. The food was terrific, and we chose the perfect wine pairing—surprisingly affordable too. The waiter was a little too attentive with refilling our water and wine glasses ;) just two sips and they were topped up again. But overall, it was all very nice, tastefully and friendly."
Susan Leppen
"This is a difficult one. Overall the food was fine, service was very much split, and atmosphere was average.
Although this is in the Michelin Guide currently, I can’t say it was in anyway stand out…
FOOD
The food is presented in a way which I understand what they are trying to do, but does feel rather dated by current standards.
Food itself was cooked well, and wouldn’t say any of it was badly done but it wasn’t great or good.
SERVICE
There are clearly 2 tiers of service staff here. Our order was taken by a lady who clearly knew the menu, and knew how to run proper front of house staff. She was very good, attentive, and knowledgable - excellent.
But the rest of the general staff were a bit clueless? they didn’t seem to really know much about the food, drinks, or what was going on. Real shame compared to the lady who took our order
ATMOSPHERE
We went on a Wednesday and there were a total of 6 other tables, it was not busy, and it felt slow. The decor was fine, but nothing amazing.
Overall, average. Everything about this place is just average."

"Fantastic.
Visiting from London / South East UK, and pleased to say our palates were well looked after. Surprised to see someone describe it as horrendous, that feels harsh and unnecessary tbh !
We had one Fish Lover and one Meat Lover set, with a wine pairing for the meat. Sat outside. Lovely staff, and the live guitarist was perfect background to a thoughtful and genuinely tasty meal
Had booked thru Google Maps, having experienced issues with Open Table.
Only nudge is that the veg’s probably could be tidied up in prep, but the laminated menus, signage from the street and overall branding could do with a refresh to better reflect the quality of the experience !"

Where to eat in Funchal
#05 – Moving out of the old town, one of our favourite restaurants for décor is Armazém do Sal on Rua da Alfandega. It’s name translates as ‘salt warehouse’, and the restaurant’s preserved oak beams and imposing heavy stone help conjure a strong feel for the building’s past life. More importantly, the food is excellent – trout from Ribeiro Frio and octopus risotto to keep fish lovers happy, and fabulous Iberian pork and lamb from mainland Portugal.

The best restaurants in Madeira | EasyJet
Set in a 200-year-old building (a former salt store, it turns out), this is broadly considered Funchal’s best restaurant and not unfairly. The food is unshowy but excellent – dishes like octopus a lagareiro (served oven-baked with potatoes) and snapper ceviche with fried banana show flair without being finicky. A five-course 'extra value' tasting menu at €35 is a steal.
Vegan Advegtures: Funchal, Madeira
🍴 Fine dining (not a fully vegan venue but they offer vegan options) 📍 R. da Alfândega 135, 9000-059 Funchal, Portugal 💭 This is a really lovely restaurant in terms of service and setting. They were nice enough to accommodate me and created a vegan menu but I found it quite disappointing, especially because they charged me the same amount as the non-vegan menu.
