Reviews Summary

Kampo is lauded for its innovative cuisine, particularly its oxtail ravioli and premium meat dishes, with many praising the attentive service and unique open-kitchen experience. However, some diners found certain dishes to be overpowering or unbalanced in flavor, and a few noted issues with portion consistency or service delays. Despite minor criticisms, the overall sentiment points to a memorable and creative dining destination.

"We visited Kampo twice. Fantastic meat both times, definitely among the best in Madeira. The ribeye steak was delicious, though the portion size varied between visits. The only downside is the noise; it gets quite loud inside. Still, if you're after top-quality meat, Kampo is well worth it."

MatejMartinovic

"This upmarket restaurant offers both à la carte and a chef’s sharing menu. We opted for the latter. The tuna course was a bit on the strong, fishy side for our taste and, unfortunately, contained a small scale. The second dish was pleasant, though the many components made it hard to identify each element.

The absolute highlight of the evening was the oxtail – beautifully cooked, with a rich, flavorful sauce, well-prepared vegetables, and smooth mashed potatoes. Truly excellent! Dessert combined white chocolate, passionfruit, brownie, and a black olive sauce. The olive pairing wasn’t to our taste, though that may be personal preference.

If the dishes were refined a touch more and the presentation elevated, this place could really shine. Service was friendly and attentive, the pacing of the dinner was spot-on, and the atmosphere was lovely.

📍 Tip: Situated right in the center of Funchal. If you’d like to explore it for yourself, make a reservation in advance."

"The food was incredible, probably my favourite in Madeira (and of Chef Julio Pereira restaurants). We had the oxtail taco, the tuna steak and the octopus rice. The taco and the octopus rice were the standouts of the meal - highly recommend!"

Best Things to Do in Madeira, Portugal

Downtown, Ákua is a deep dive into Portugal’s seafood scene with fish charcuterie boards, braised tuna with razor clam rice, grouper carpaccio with nori, and more from the mind of acclaimed chef Júlio Pereira, whose other restaurant, Kampo, boasts a meatier menu. Also near downtown, Gazebo is a singular dining adventure inside a quinta (villa) where chef Filipe Janeiro prepares your meal mere feet from your table for an intimate and personal kitchen-to-table experience. That meal might entail beef tartare with house kimchi and shiitake mushrooms, seared black scabbard over miso-imbued smashed chickpeas, and a dessert of fresh loquat—an apricot-like tropical fruit—plucked from the trees outside and served with an almond crumble and goat cheese mousse.

how to explore Madeira's beguiling capital

Try Kampo (10), one of the latest arrivals on Funchal’s food scene, tucked down a side street with a small terrace, serving delicious fish of the day with lemon-tree sauce (kampo.pt, mains about €15). Otherwise opt for a view and a warm tiger-prawn salad on the waterfront at local designer Nini Andrade Silva’s Design Centre (11) (ninidesigncentre.com/pt, mains about €19). For dinner, splash out at Michelin-starred restaurant William at Belmond Reid’s Palace, and dine on the island’s finest produce, from cherry and lobster gazpacho to suckling pig with cauliflower, caviar and almond (mains about €38).

The Quiet Beaches of Portugal's Madeira Islands

This was quite the contrast with the modern dishes at Kampo, a seriously hip Funchal restaurant with an open kitchen and a poured-concrete bar. We ate sophisticated versions of Portuguese specialties such as a savory bola de Berlim doughnut, which is usually sweet but is here filled with chorizo and mushroom and topped with powdered sugar.

We therefore will be looking for reasonably priced good value restaunts in the area.
