Zé da Mouraria

If not for the persistent crowd at the door, you would probably get lost searching for Zé da Mouraria, which is hidden in a narrow cobbled street in the age-old Mouraria quarter. This establishment has made a name for itself thanks to its delicious traditional dishes (the cuttlefish is a must-have) and very generous portions. The walls are covered with pictures of the owner standing with illustrious customers such as actors and politicians, all agreeing that the food is well worth the wait.

The servings here are so big that you must either come very hungry or with a big group. The flaked salt cod, served with chick peas, roast potatoes and peppers is divine – there is just no other word for it.

Zé da Mouraria is celebrated for its straightforward, affordable, and utterly delicious codfish dishes. Tucked away in Mouraria, one of the city’s most quintessentially Lisbon neighborhoods, this eatery exudes a casual, welcoming atmosphere that attracts both locals and tourists in search of genuine Portuguese flavors amidst the myriad of tourist-oriented spots. At Zé da Mouraria, the menu shines with its emphasis on traditional Portuguese cuisine, especially noted for its meat steaks, grilled fish, and unique offerings like iscas à Portuguesa (liver steak) or grilled swordfish with shrimp.

At first sight, Zé da Mouraria may seem on the expensive side, but when the portions are big enough to feed a party of three or four, it can cost as little as €10 a head. This traditional tasca is known for its  bacalhau, roasted salt cod topped with chickpeas and smashed potatoes, and  bifinhos ao alhinho (steak and garlic). There is one location in Mouraria that opens for lunch and another one, near Anjos, that also opens for dinner.

If you want a quick and simple Portuguese meal of great god or grilled meats make sure to visit Zé da Mouraria, still the best in what they do. If you want to experience a real Lisbon old-school vibe make sure to book an evening table at Tasca Bela, an old-fashioned place with Portuguese food and incredible fado singers that will make you feel "saudades" of Lisbon straight away!

I stopped at Zé da Mouraria, which was recommended by my friend in Japan who saw it featured on a Japanese travel show. I took the tram from the Fernando Pessoa museum, which took far longer than expected — even with a seat, it was too long to enjoy the scenery from one end of the city to the other. Even with GPS, it wasn’t easy to follow the narrow alleys to the restaurant.

Restaurante Zé da Mouraria (I think it is typically closed for the month of August for holidays, which is the month I happen to be in Lisbon) – This is a Portuguese restaurant that I had at the top of my list to try in Lisbon. To my disappointment, they were closed the entire time I was in Lisbon, so I didn’t have a chance to eat here. So let me know if you go!.

This literal hole-in-the-wall restaurant is located in the old Moorish neighbourhood of Mouraria, hence the name of the restaurant, in the old quarter of Alfama. Getting to the restaurant requires navigating tiny, narrow cobblestoned streets off side streets and alleys. Busy for both lunch and dinner, this restaurant is so old school it doesn't even have a menu!

They say it takes two to tango, well it takes just as many, if not more, to eat the massive food portions that come out of Zé da Mouraria’s kitchen (Rua João do Outeiro, 24). Tucked away in Mouraria, the home of Fado music, this restaurant is one of our favorite spots in Lisbon. Here, you can taste authentic Portuguese food served in huge steel pots.

Restaurante Ze da Mouraria was a total last-minute decision, and it was one of the better meals I had during my time here. It is located in the old Moorish section of Lisbon, and the menu changes daily and serves lunch only. Local businessmen will likely be dining around you, sipping red wine and chatting as they indulge in this midday meal.

When looking for the best budget restaurants in Lisbon to enjoy cheap eats, you can get big portions to share at Zé da Mouraria. Remember that prices at Zé da Mouraria may seem deceivingly low, but rest assured that one portion is enough for at least two people, if not more. So don’t hesitate to bring a friend or two along!

Located on a small side street, close by Alfama and Martim Moniz, you will probably not just randomly walk by this charming local favorite. If you do, it’s still easy to pass it, since it doesn’t look that special from the outside. Once you enter, its personality rather than beauty will win you over.

This Tasca located in Mouraria is open just for lunch and is quiet popular among the locals. It’s not as cheap as other tascas in the area but normally the very big portions are enough for 2 people. I recommend trying the bifinhos ao alhinho ( garlic steak), its most popular dish.

Ze da Mouraria is nestled within the narrow streets and small squares of the Moorish Quarter, also known as Mouraria. This hidden gem is one of the best local restaurants in Lisbon. It’s a tasca or tavern and is part of the frew remaining tasca’s in the city.

Ze da Mouraria (R. João do Outeiro 24) is famous for family-style plates of codfish and chickpeas. Ze dos Cornos (Beco dos Surradores 5) is a cozier option, with a sweet family serving straight-forward meals that any Portuguese would recognize and love.

Unlikely as it seems, there is no Zè in this restaurant in the center of Mouraria. The man who is in charge of the kitchen is Virgìlio Oliveira. Grew up Lisbon but formerly from Minho, Virgìlio is not the typical tasca chef, he is far from it.

Portions are enormous (one dish for two) and the food is tasty. The menu changes every day and is not written in English, but the waiter will advise you on the special of the day. Duck in a rice stew or squids are not uncommon.

Tasty and plentiful servings, fair prices, and a queue at the door. That is the traditional Zé da Mouraria, which already has two restaurants in Lisbon. The more traditional and famous one is open only for lunch.

These tascas in Lisbon are delicious and affordable: O Maravilhas, Zé dos Cornos and Zé da Mouraria. This last one is famous for its large food portions, so order one dish to share among two or three people.
