Adega São Nicolau

We don’t hold back about the stuff we love, and when it comes to the Adega São Nicolau, we love everything. There’s a menu full of great choices – chicken bordelaise, octopus fillets with rice, or the perfect appetiser, cod cakes. Then there are the desserts (all homemade) and the outdoors tables, overlooking the Douro river.

If you want a regular meal, with all the food groups, there are standout places for sure: Adega São Nicolau is one, but it’s extremely hard to go wrong. Rip-off restaurants seem to be a late-stage evolution that only beset capital cities. Or maybe I just got lucky.

Speaking of which, Adega São Nicolau serves some of the best northern Portuguese meat dishes like figado de vitela (calf’s liver) and rabo de vitela à nossa moda (veal tail) that you can enjoy with views of the Douro River.

Anyone passing Taberna dos Mercadores and Adega de São Nicolau will immediately notice the resemblance of the two restaurants, and it’s no coincidence: they are owned by the same people, an example of Portuguese hospitality. On the menu you will find many traditional Portuguese dishes, such as bacalhau à Narcisa (17.50€) – fried codfish with onions and french fries – and veal steak from Arouca – a part of Portugal renowned for its meat – (16.50€), but the real surprises are the specials, only available if ordered in advance and depending on the season of the year; dishes such as capelin stuffed with Alheira (a typical Portuguese sausage made of birds, bread and spices), rabbit in red wine and partridge with chestnuts. Dishes that tend to get lost in the modern lexicon but resonate through Portuguese culture.

It is one of the best-known restaurants in the city, and, to make a reservation, it is advisable to do so well in advance. The interior space is small and, in summer or hotter periods, you can enjoy the delicacies of Adega São Nicolau, on its outdoor deck, which has little more than 4 to 6 tables. Anyone who visits this restaurant knows that they are going on a gastronomic journey through Portuguese culture, not only because of the delicacies and wines that will be tasted, but also because of the tableware itself, which is all designed by Real Companhia Velha, one of the most charismatic companies in the city.

We are isolated from the offices and parking is complicated, so they don’t regularly come,” says Renata Coelho, who runs three of the most traditional and popular restaurants in the area: Taberna dos Mercadores, Terreiro and Adega São Nicolau. Gentrification has also alienated many residents – now almost all the buildings in the area are home to hotels or guesthouses. So it was heartening to see more tourists – “mainly our Spanish neighbors and French people,” she says – arrive.

The historic centre of the city, Ribeira & São Nicolau form one of the most tourist attracting areas in Porto. But it’s much more than just centuries-old buildings. Traditional settings carrying cultural wealth, rows of colorful postcard perfect houses, narrow cobblestone streets all lined with restaurants and cafes, hole-in-the-wall taverns, bars offering gorgeous views of the Douro river, colorful wine boats - will all make you immerse yourself in the city’s heritage.

Adega São Nicolau is instantly recognizable thanks to its curvaceous wooden ceiling that illuminates after the sun sets. This atmospheric restaurant might look swanky but it draws in foodies with its homey Portugese cooking, country-wide wine list, simple desserts and traditional fado singers. If you’re feeling brave, try peasant-style dishes like stewed veal tongue with potato chips, or stick to classics like chicken bordelaise and deep-fried octopus fillets.

This was on my list for a long time as I’d heard it’s where Porto chefs like to eat Portuguese food in the city. While I’m not sure that’s still the case, given it’s downtown location in Ribeira is now overrun by throngs of tourists, but the quality at Adega São Nicholau remains top. I’ve been around three times now and often take visiting friends here as the quality, variety and price align nicely.

Adega São Nicolau –This restaurant felt like we were eating inside a wine cellar and was our last feast of the trip!. It’s almost like you could barely fit in the restaurant with an oval, wooden paneled ceiling lined with wine bottles. The menu has my heart all over it: Shellfish Rice, Grilled Sardines, Octopus Filets with Octopus Rice, an Oxtail Stew that looked awesome.

There are however, a few gems, including Adega São Nicolau, tucked down a charming little alleyway away from the masses. Whilst we might have had the good fortune of simply stumbling upon this homely, traditional restaurant ourselves, we were promptly informed that this is an eating house where the top Porto chefs go when they want good, honest Portuguese food.

Adega São Nicolau features several great petiscos with classic Portuguese flavors. It’s nestled in Porto’s Ribeira neighborhood, which makes it a great stop for a quick bite on a day trip in the heart of the city. The interior décor has a rustic charm with warm wooden accents and classic Portuguese tilework, which creates an authentic atmosphere.

Keep the seafood party going at Adega São Nicolau for dinner, located on the west end of the Porto's riverwalk. It is located near an entrance of one of many alleys. During our visit, we started with bacalhau fritters and fried alheira sausages.

Our favorite in the area is the “Adega São Nicolau”, at Rua de São Nicolau 1(see googlemaps). A few meters away is a more traditional and cheaper Restaurant called “Ora Viva” (see googlemaps).

Firstly, I suggest Adega de São Nicolau located in Cais da Ribeira. The average price for two people is 45€, and I especially recommend the octopus fillets with octopus rice.

In summer, however, it is best to try to get one of the terrace seats. Then you can enjoy the delicious Portuguese specialities with an unobstructed view of the Douro.

Another great restaurant we tried was Adega Sao Nicalou where we also had a seafood stew, grilled prawns, sardines and again some fantastic desserts.
