Another great and much-loved spot among those familiar with Porto is Lado B Café, located around the corner from the historic Majestic Café and in front of the beautiful azulejo-covered Church of Saint Ildefonso, so you can’t miss it. The francesinhas (which they market on the menu as “the best in the world”) cost €8.25 (you can pay an addition €1.20 for a side of fries, ideal for dipping into the spiced amber sauce) and there is a vegetarian option for €8.95.

It's cheeky to trademark "The best Francesinha in the world" but Lado B did just that – and the kitchen takes the obviously subjective claim quite seriously. The fries are crispy, the bread is crunchy and the beer is fresh.

I have already told you about Lado B on my article about the best restaurants for francesinha, the famous sandwich from Porto. But Lado B deserves to be mentioned once again on this blog as it is not only an amazing place for francesinha but also for group dinners 🙂 It has a large room at the front where you can easily fit a group of 20 people, and on the back it has a small room that is perfect if you’re looking for some privacy.Specialities of the house include francesinhas, burgers, grilled steaks and hot dogs. And for dessert ask for an apple crumble with vanilla ice cream, take my word for it 😉

Ribeira has quite a few establishments specializing in francesinha, but Lado B Café, across the street from the Ageas Porto Coliseum, is often one of the first places to spring to mind. I’ve rarely passed this place and not noticed a queue forming outside, and my curiosity eventually got the better of me the last time I was in Porto. Luckily, the line moved pretty quickly and I got a table inside the modern, lively dining area in around ten minutes.

If there were one dish to carry the culinary flag for Porto, then it would probably be the francesinha. It’s such an important part of Porto’s culture that no visit to this city can ever be complete without enjoying this belly-busting sandwich. A francesinha is a sandwich made with bread, wet-cured ham, linguiça (Portuguese sausage), and steak or roast beef which is then covered with melted cheese and drenched in a thick tomato and beer sauce.

The tour guide from my Douro Valley wine tour (highly recommended while you’re in Porto!) told me that Lado B has the best francesinha sandwich in Porto. So, when I checked their online menu and found that they had a vegetarian option, I had to check it out. A francesinha is a sandwich filled with different kinds of meat, and then topped with a fried egg and/or cheese before having a big scoop of hot tomato-beer sauce poured on top.

Once one of the best kept secrets of Porto, after Anthony Bourdain went there for the TV Show Parts Unknown, it became part of every list of restaurants to try in the city.

But, if despite everything, your friend - the carnivore - has gotten into his head that he does not leave Porto without enjoying his star dish, do not despair, in Santa Francesinha (Praça dos Poveiros, 72) or in Lado B (rúa Passos Manuel, 190) there is a wonderful vegetarian version of the francesinha.

Its owner had a music shop on Cedofeita Street and decided to open a “B side” to his original business. They were one of the first to offer a vegetarian version of the francesinha as demand was high and the need to adapt without taking away from the origins of the dish was key.
