By now we were beginning to feel damp from the sea mist and more importantly hungry, and so we made the excellent decision to enjoy lunch in the Vinum Restaurant at the port lodge where we were booked in for a tour later in the afternoon. Of course that entailed a walk back up hill as thanks to ‘trade’ contacts my friend had arranged for us to have a personal tour at Graham’s, a fabulous port lodge but also the one that happened to be the furthest away from everything!

Os pratos foram criados especialmente para harmonizar com os vinhos Douro DOC e do Porto produzidos com mestria pela família Symington. Vinum Restaurant & Wine Bar is a highly rated restaurant that offers panoramic views of the Douro River and the historic center of Porto. The glass enclosed restaurant is located on the top floor of Graham’s Port Lodge, on the Vila Nova de Gaia side of the river. Bit of a hike up the hill if you’re on foot and not a walker, but well worth it. We managed to snag a table for lunch on the covered terrace (with a view) rather than inside in the (still very cool) restaurant. They were initially reluctant to serve us outside on the other (uncovered) sun terrace, but we had lunch inside and then drinks outside afterwards….quite a few drinks as it turned out.

Apart from the guided tour to their cellars, Graham’s has one of the best restaurants in Porto region (VINUM Restaurant) and a wine bar where you can admire the view over Porto while enjoying some appetisers and a fine Port. Information: if you went on the gastronomic tour the day before, then you should settle with a simple walk along the riverfront to admire Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia.

The Vinum Restaurant & Winebar is a delight for the senses in Vila Nova de Gaia. Its star dish, Polvo à Lagareiro, offers an irresistible combination of flavors and aromas, capturing the essence of Portuguese cuisine. The modern and chic décor creates a sophisticated ambiance, with carefully selected details, such as elegant lamps and comfortable furniture, adding a touch of refinement.

I was welcomed into Vinum and seated in the sunroom-like portion, with a great view over the patio and out toward the river. Graham’s whole operation and Vinum Restaurant both manage to blend the vibes of a 19th-century port lodge with a very contemporary feel, lots of white with black touches and high ceilings. It’s very light and airy, and really sparkled on a sunny day.

Graham’s Port Lodge and its 19th-century wine cellars give Vinum access to some of the best petisco and wine tastings in Porto. Not to mention stunning river views of the Douro as you enjoy a small plate meal with a glass of fine wine. The interior of Vinum is warm and feels a little bit like you’re in an old-fashioned taberna that was brought up to modern specs.

Vinum is a restaurant connected to Graham’s which brings in the best local ingredients from the Atlantic and Northern Portugal, including fresh fish daily from the local Matosinhos harbor. Every dish is thoughtfully paired with the beautiful wines of the Douro Valley. Guests will enjoy incredible sunset views from inside the restaurant or the open-air terrace.

All the reasons are good to celebrate Valentine’s Day and at Vinum, a restaurant overlooking the Douro, there is a menu designed for the date, with tuna tartar with tomato confit, cod “à Braga” and old beef cutlet of Trás-os-Montes, among others. Without wines, the meal is € 55 per person and, with wines, € 105.

Its main room is historic and offers an interesting view of the wine barrels in the caves. In addition, it presents a high quality gastronomic proposal!

Before the Brits started exporting port from this side of the river in Vila Nova de Gaia (to avoid paying tariffs) the southern bank was empty. No residences just riverside. Now it is sprawling and one hilltop houses the two giants of the Port wine industry Graham’s and Taylor’s.
