Terug in Sintra ligt Apeadeiro, een ander lokaal trefpunt dat grotendeels nog onbedorven is door de toeristische horden, hoewel een zitcapaciteit van ongeveer 100 betekent dat het nauwelijks een rustig hoekje is. Het menu en de bijbehorende Engelse afbeeldingengids bestaat grotendeels uit echte regionale gerechten. De bediening is hier warm en vriendelijk genoeg om elk diner op zijn gemak te stellen, en royale porties zorgen voor een goede prijs-kwaliteitsverhouding.

We had a very memorable dinner at Apeadeiro, which was recommended to us by the concierge at the Sintra park tourist information centre. It was wonderfully authentic and mainly patronised by Portuguese tourists and locals living in Sintra. Also, do not forget to try the local dessert, the Travesseiro de Sintra, which is a fluffy pastry pillow, stuffed with almond cream, as well as ginjinha poured into a chocolate cup.

Restaurante Apeadeiro – Only a few minutes walk from the train station, this is the great stop to enjoy classic portuguese dishes, great wines all with friendly service. It’s well-known and a go to for locals. Some dishes are designed to share whole fresh caught fish or rice dishes.

Nothing fancy, this large restaurant was recommended by several people in town. We asked the waitress for the local favorites and were pleasantly surprised. I had a simple panfried codfish served with lemons and olives, but David’s pork with clams and potatoes was the favorite.

Places like Incomum and Apeadeiro have built devoted followings by offering superior food at fair prices to those willing to walk an extra 300 meters. This pattern repeats throughout Sintra: the most rewarding experiences require effort to escape the crowds.

Another good option for a sweet breakfast is this bakery close to the train station. As the name suggests everything here revolves around freshly made croissants. I can highly recommend the chocolate croissants!

It offers a variety of traditional dishes, as well as seafood and fresh ingredients. The portions are large and the prices are quite reasonable. The staff is friendly and accommodating.
