In the Debar Maalo district, 50 different eateries serve hearty Balkan dishes such as cow tongue, pig intestine, and fried lamb brain. The relaxed acoustic guitar vibes found here are replaced by a local form of turbo-folk if you go out of the center to places like La Pana, where groups of friends sit on circular tables nursing bottles of raki until, many hours later, they find themselves dancing on the chairs.

Urban Hostel is Skopje's best budget option, with a choice of dorms, twin rooms or self-catering apartments in Debar Maalo, a lively neighbourhood full of bars and restaurants (dorms from €13, apartments from €46, urbanhostel.com.mk).

Expect a cross-section of east meets west here, with an Arabian style bazaar that sits just across the river from the vibrant Debar Maalo neighbourhood with its multitude of clubs and bars.

Between the trees and houses from the beginning of the 20th century in the old neighborhood of Debar Maalo, there is a charming "Bohemian street". At the end, near the City park is Chardak where I eat delicious and traditional Macedonian cuisine like: the famous Macedonian Bukovka mushrooms -- grilled, with an amazing smoky taste; Sarma -- stuffed vine leaves with rice and meat, topped with yogurt and cream sauce; Tavce Gravce -- bean soup made by a Macedonian recipe; Shopska salata -- mixed healthy veggies with feta cheese; Makalo – a small plate of blended peppers, garlic and beans, and of course freshly baked Macedonian bread, directly from the oven, that I dip in the Makalo using my hands.

Well-located near Universal Hall and the hip Debar Maalo neighborhood, Urban Hostel is a spacious and relaxed place which also has 14 private apartments on offer in the near vicinity. Set right on Makedonija St. at the Main Square, the new Hostel Rekord has the best location, and offers three dorms and a private room (but no kitchen). The tiny but friendly Unity Hostel is located on Boulevard Ilindenska, near the shiny retrofitted government buildings, a short walk from the City Park and Debar Maalo to the west and the main square to the west.

Sights slightly outside the centre include the Debar Maalo district, labelled the “bohemian nightlife area” of town. Definitely not your cheapest party option, but sure worth a visit. While there, have a peek at the oddly shaped and therefore oh-so-“Skopjan” Church of St. Clement of Ohrid, as well as the immense City Park… the favorite Sunday hangout for all its inhabitants.

Skopje’s Debar Maalo (Bohemian Quarter) is a great place to visit a ‘kafana‘ (traditional restaurant) and sample some authentic Macedonian meal. The most popular street, called Bohemian street or ‘Boemska ulica’ is home to many excellent restaurants. On sunny weekends it can seem like everyone hangs out here, locals squeeze into the taverns and spill onto its terraces.

One of the best places for fun is the Debar Maalo neighborhood, a district known for its bars and clubs. This part of Skopje has something for everyone, from live music clubs to classic pubs and taverns. Here you can hear different music genres, from electronic music to traditional Macedonian music, which provides diversity and satisfies the tastes of all visitors.

The hipster neighbourhood of Skopje reminded me directly of the Dorćol district in Belgrade remembers. Here you will find the hippest cafés and restaurants in the city, but you can also enjoy traditional Macedonian cuisine - an experience in Skopje that you shouldn't miss. Especially as the local restaurants often hire live musicians to create a unique atmosphere.

Skopje City Zoo where you can see the various animals that call Skopje their home, the quay of the river Vardar with a great cycling and jogging path, the National Arena Phillip II - home of Macedonian national football team as well as local teams FK Rabotnicki and FK Vardar as well as Debar Maalo which is famous for the many popular café-bars and restaurants.

This is a beautiful traditional restaurant situated in the heart of the town. With its charming house-like sitting areas and the delicious food, it definitely is one of the most visited nearby. After the tour of the museum on the hill, follow the Vardar river and you just might find yourself in the liveliest quarter of Macedonia. There’s a big café culture in this country, and Debar Maalo is the heart of it. If the Old Bazaar was the best place for breakfast, then Debar Maalo is the perfect lunch’n’lounge area.

Local residents say the redevelopment project, called Skopje 2014, has been a huge waste of taxpayers' money and that the kitschy statues, monuments, and new buildings don't reflect 'the real Macedonia.' For a taste of that, you need to head to the Ottoman old town, or Debar Maalo, the bohemian district.

Interestingly enough, you cannot find Debar Maalo in Google Maps. The street called Leninova and the circled area in red is the actual area that’s known as Debar Maalo. Smidgin Distillery is in Debar Maalo so why not go for a stroll in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Skopje.

It is about 2 km from the Stone Bridge and near the city park. Visiting Debar Maalo is probably one of the most enjoyable things to do in Skopje for people who appreciate good traditional food. There are many bistros and restaurants where you can enjoy superb local specialties.

Debar Maalo is Skopje’s cool, laid-back, and artsy neighbourhood. Think green streets, colourful street art, and a slightly bohemian atmosphere that feels young and energetic. It’s an excellent choice for budget travellers since prices are lower here than in the city centre.

Just a short walk from Skopje’s city centre, you’ll come to Debar Maalo. It’s a totally different ambience here from the kitsch of the New Town and the hustle and bustle of the Old Town. Here you’ll find streets lined with trees and numerous trendy cafes and restaurants.

If you are staying in Skopje and want to taste some wine from North Macedonia, you can find many great wine bars in the Debar Maalo region. Alternatively, if you want to get out of the city to visit a vineyard, consider a tour like this one, which visits Kartal Winery.

If you want to experience the real Macedonian eating and drinking scene, be sure to visit the Debar Maalo neighborhood by the City Park. Debar Maalo is renowned for its Bohemian streets. Here you can find the traditional Macedonian restaurants known as “kafani.

For dinner, you could head to the Debar Maalo area, famed for its restaurants. But, if you only have one night, return to the Old Bazaar, to Pivnica An (or Beerhouse An; Maksim Gorki 1), a traditional restaurant in an atmospheric 15th-century caravanserai.

A city center can offer only so much insight into a foreign place. Luckily, Skopje’s hip neighborhood of Debar Maalo isn’t too far off the beaten path. When wandering around Debar Maalo, you don’t realize how close you are to the city center.

No visit to Debar Maalo is complete without stopping by Kafana Debar Maalo. This traditional kafana (a type of Balkan tavern) offers an authentic experience with live music, hearty food, and an ambiance that feels quintessentially Macedonian.

This tree lined area had some excellent cafes, restaurants, and bars. Located around 1-1.5kms out of the city, we recommend you check it out, particularly as it had one of the best coffee shops we have visited on our trip so far (see below)!

We stayed in the Debar Maalo neighborhood and this was the best route from our location. Specifically, our accommodation was just a few blocks away from the restaurant Skopski Merak, about a mile west of the city center.
