It’s a small, easy-going joint run by an enthusiastic team of baristas who really know their beans; be it a cappuccino, ristretto or lungo, the quality is consistently high and the service impeccable. At dusk, the venue morphs into a brilliant cocktail-cum-wine bar.

Bob Coffee Lab is a favorite in Charles de Gaulle Square, where roaster and co-founder Alexandru Niculae is the World Coffee Roasting Champion for 2016, while Origo remains one of the pioneers of the city’s specialty-coffee scene.

Steam and Origo are very close on my favorites list, but I’ll have to go with Origo, since it’s probably the oldest specialty café in Bucharest (as far as I know). It paved the way for others, and is now supplying coffee beans all over Romania. Always packed, buzzing with tourists and locals waiting patiently for their daily dose of caffeine, it’s where you “have to” go when in Bucharest.

What made it stand out was that, along with excellent coffee, I had the best customer service experience there. Origo had table service, which was a bit unsual for third wave coffee shops, but I happily took a seat and waited for the “server”.

f you want to feel like you’re in Brooklyn in the heart of Bucharest, head on down to Origo, where you can have delicious freshly roasted beans done any way you like it, even with your choice of origin (the day I went, espresso bean options were from Nicaragua and Ethiopia). Make sure you stop at Origo – a coffee bar by day and cocktail bar by night. Steps away from the old town and with a whole different vibe, Origo rivals the more high volume joints in town. I had the Endless Summer – a mix of elderflower cordial, coffee and tonic and, I swear, it was life-changing!.

I’m not a fan of high acidity, and the barista recommended a Colombian bean that would suit my taste. And while I did detect a little acidity in the front end, it really mellowed completely at the back of my palate. Origo’s interior is small so they ask you not to use a laptop here.

This straight-to-the-point coffee shop isn’t the cheapest in town but is one of the best. With a simple, yet ultramodern design, this cafe focuses on proper preparation methods of the highest quality coffee and tea. One thing to note, they do have a fairly strict no laptop policy.

If you are a coffee lover, which I know I am, then you’re not going to want to miss this place. We rented an Airbnb apartment and we found this place because it’s in the neighborhood. I think it’s one of the places with the kindest service I’ve ever came across.

I first discovered third-wave coffee at Brew Lab in Edinburgh. Single-origin roasts are a whole different level of coffee, and they’ve found their way to Bucharest. Origo takes them one step further.
