Reviews Summary

Kok Sen Restaurant is celebrated for its authentic zi char dishes and friendly service, with the Big Prawn Hor Fun and Claypot Yong Tau Foo being standout favorites. While many praise the quality and value, some diners note long wait times and occasional issues with dish availability or billing. Reddit+3

"Good Singaporean restaurant. Found it from review in YouTube and other recommendations somewhere. Our group of 13 people are really enjoyed our lunch there. We made a reservation through WhatsApp of the restaurant which is the easiest way to do and I recommend you to do it to secure your seating. Seating area are air conditioned. Every dish are really good, fresh ingredients and well cooked. Price are reasonable. Credit card accepted. Staffs are helpful. Enjoy!"

Supakij Khomvilai

"I visited for lunch on 19 April. I made a reservation via WhatsApp before visiting. They only accept reservation for groups of at least 4 pax. There was already a long queue when I arrived at 11.55 pm (restaurants open at 12 pm). I could enter with priority when the restaurant opened as I had a reservation.

We ordered several dishes: big prawn hot fun, sambal kang kong, prawn paste chicken wings, yong tau fu and a deep fried frog legs with ginger (not pictured). The food was fairly good but not the best Tze char I had in sg. My favourite dish was the sambal Kang kong.

Pricing: we paid around $150 (5 diners) for this meal (including 2 bottles of Tiger Beer). The price is fair considering the central location this Tze char is found.

Atmosphere: the atmosphere is that of a local eatery. Not super comfortable but better than a coffee shop. There were a number of flies buzzing around. Other than that, it is a decent eastern."

Youli Hong

"Quite good value for money. Decent food though I personally don’t feel that it’s outstanding. When we arrived, there were people queueing even before they opened. Typical SG foodies! 😂 thankfully Boss made reservations. Noise level is a bit too much for me but you get used to it after a while when focus shifts to the food 😆"

30 Best Restaurants in Singapore, According to a Local

Formerly a large hawker stall on the ground floor of two shophouses, Kok Sen received a glow-up in 2022, moving a few doors down into a glass-walled, air-conditioned space with plusher furniture. What hasn’t changed, though, are the crowds spilling out at mealtimes—a clue that this continues to be one of the bastions of local fare. There's a reason why Kok Sen never fails to make it into "best Singapore food" lists: It has a delicious menu of tze char (Chinese homecooked-style fare) dishes.

Even when dining in isn't an option, there's still a queue at this Bib Gourmand-listed restaurant. People just can't seem to get enough of its famous big prawns hor fun (from $20.70). Add its claypot yong tau foo (from $17.25), where vegetables and tofu come stuffed with fish and squid paste, and bitter gourd cooked with pork ribs in black bean sauce (from $17.25) to your order and you’ll understand why people return to this joint time and again.

Being featured on the Bib Gourmand list of the Michelin Guide 2016 means snaking queues outside of Kok Sen Restaurant during peak hours, but good food is always worth the wait. Big Prawns Hor Fun ($16/$32/$48) shot this restaurant to fame, and it comprises silky hor fun covered in a rich prawn-based gravy with swirls of egg and four large prawns. Another dish to order is Claypot Yong Tau Fu ($14/$21/$28), which features a medley of deep-fried yong tau fu pieces soaked in a bubbling cauldron of braising sauce.

New and Buzzing Singapore Restaurants In February 2025

This is the first time Kok Sen Restaurant (also a Michelin Bib Gourmand contender) opened in a mall after 54 years, and it located on level 4 of the revamped mall. There are new outlet exclusive dishes to City Square Mall like the Crispy Smoked Tea Duck and Kok Sen’s original Big Prawn Thick Beehoon White Soup. Unfortunately, the duck was a tad too dry for me, though you do get that tinge of tea flavour in the meat.
