Reviews Summary

Belly of the Beast offers a unique and intimate dining experience with highly creative, locally sourced tasting menus. Guests praise the bold flavors, attentive team service, and educational insights into the dishes. However, some diners find the recent price increases and the mandatory gratuity policy disappointing, with occasional inconsistencies in dish execution.

"We had supper there last Friday.

The servers are very welcoming and assisted us to our seats immediately.

We perused the menu thoroughly.

The restuarant does have a corkage available on your own wine.

There are also a wide variety of alcoholic beverages to choose from. They even do a pairing with your food, ranging from R550 to R750 extra.

The menu for the night is a set menu, so no picking and choosing. I would also like to add that I am somewhat of a picky eater, but gosh! these people can cook! They are so creative with the presentation and the flavours are out of this world!! Think - foodgasm!!

We had smiles and laughs with all the servers throughout the night. The restaurant is a 24 seater, so it give intimate and exclusivity vibes.

Reservations are required well in advance, but it is easy to book online. They do require a deposit though, which is fair.

The menu changes every 6 weeks, so keep that in mind for when you want to make your return booking.

Cannot wait to go back soon!"

"The food here was very tasty and well-balanced, with each dish offering fresh, exciting flavors. I especially enjoyed the duck biryani, it was incredible. While a few dishes didn’t quite match my personal taste, overall it was a great experience. The atmosphere is lovely, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone in the area. Be sure to book well in advance, this place fills up quickly."

"Local flavours perfected!

I cannot put this experience in words. This experience is where you will find that quality far exceeds the price you pay.

The staff, the wine, the atmosphere and the variety of food / flavours that you get to experience make this an unforgettable experience.

Please go and experience this at least once!"

The 62 best restaurants in Cape Town

An intimate experience in the hip ‘East City’ hood, with chefs Anouchka Horn and Neil Swart doing everything themselves, from preparing dishes to serving diners. As such there are fixed arrival times for both lunch and dinner, a maximum of 30 diners, and very little flexibility when it comes to their innovative tasting menu, which is presented only once guests arrive (given 24-hour advance notice, vegetarians and pescatarians are provided with an alternative menu; regrettably vegans and allergy restrictions cannot be accommodated). The duo are proponents of the usual ‘nose to tail’ and ‘locally sourced’ mantras, sourcing from small-scale fishers and farmers, with their South African roots evident throughout.

s Guide to the best restaurants in Cape Town

You know you’re in for a real treat when you arrive at a restaurant and are greeted personally by the chefs – and that’s exactly what happens at Cape Town’s first crowdfunded restaurant, the Belly of the Beast. Located in the trendier-than-thou Eastern Precinct, the space seats only 20 and the taster-style menu changes daily according to what Anouchka and Neil can beg, borrow, forage and buy – think meltingly-soft lamb ravioli, crispy warthog, and South African Kabeljou with the creamiest of asparagus risottos – and a mouth-watering array of desserts. Just opened next door is their latest venture, Galjoen, focused on much the same principle of fresh, sustainably-sourced ingredients but all centred around seafood.
