Reviews Summary
Clarke's Bar & Dining Room is celebrated for its consistently delicious food, particularly its burgers and famous grilled cheese. Diners rave about the lively atmosphere and friendly service, making it a beloved spot on Bree Street. While generally highly praised, some reviews mention slow service during peak times and the cashless policy.
"I had a blueberry and banana muffin which was gluten free and it was amazing. My red cappuccino was good, a little cooler than I expected, but others at the table got their hot drinks heated a little more. Atmosphere was great, lots of seating and service was a little slowish but that could have been due to us all talking so much, and she was giving us the space we might have needed; in which case the service was on point.
All in all I really liked it there, and recommend a visit."

"I joined Clarke’s for lunch and it was lovely. They have a few nice outdoor areas and indoor is very trendy also.
They have a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup was really really good. I had it like a starter but it could be a main. I also had a burger which was very good but couldn’t finish it because my eyes are too big for my stomach.
The staff were really lovely and have character and the menu is for hungry people.
Great spot for lunch but they do an all day breakfast and dinner as well."

"It's one of those places you say you're going to visit but never have the time until you get invited. At least, that was my experience. The waitress was patient & kind with our big group. I appreciate that. They found setting for us inside as got chilly outside. Their Mimosas are great! Want something for brunch try the Kimchi rich with poached Eggs, mushrooms & radish. Or a Kimchi pulled pork toasties! Beautiful place! And definitely a Cape Town staple."

Restaurants in Cape Town City Centre
A Bree Street institution beloved by the young and hip, Clarke's is known for many things, among them its burgers (with their famously butter-fried brioche buns), drinks (from smoothies and fresh juices to excellent cocktails and everything else you'd expect from a place with the word "bar" in its name), and delicious breakfasts (the huevos rancheros are yummy if not strictly authentic). As day turns to night, this light and bright restaurant (seating options range from a few tables on the sidewalk, to a designer-diner interior, to a small plant-filled courtyard) morphs from a child-friendly brunch spot to a casual coffee and burger joint, to a vibey nighttime bar, where DJs and parties are not unusual. Service is friendly and fast.

Looking at the bustle and vibe – waiters ferrying burgers and Aperol Spritz, tattooed hipsters clustered around tables, bearded Boomers on their laptops – it’s hard to believe lockdown almost killed Clarke’s. Locals rallied, artists donated artworks, Strauss Gallery arranged an online art auction and regulars made generous bids, a testament to what this hub means to the community. It’s a casual and welcoming atmosphere: dogs are as welcome as solo workers, it’s happy hour 5pm to 6pm and a half dozen oysters will run you 120 bucks.
