I loved this place; beautifully decorated, with an outdoor shaded terrace and most importantly, absolutely delicious food. Make sure you visit here on any trip to Knysna and at the very least, buy some fresh bread or patisseries from their on site bakery. We had both breakfast and lunch at Ile de Pain (on different days); the former has a great range of both traditional (think French toast with berry compôte and mascarpone cream or muesli, yogurt and fresh fruit) and more inventive dishes such as Trout Tartine with rainbow tout, soft boiled egg, horseradish mayo and seasonal salad (bloody lovely).

Liezie’s meals are fun, unpretentious, full of vibrant flavours and textures. She is adamant about sourcing the freshest, best quality ingredients from nearby farmers and other purveyors, and shapes her menus around these, according to the seasons. As Markus says, “The best chef or baker can only be a good shepherd to the best natural ingredients.” Their philosophy of good craftsmanship, integrity and simplicity, rooted in a deep and sophisticated understanding; and their intention to share their enthusiasm and love for food and life with others – these are what draw so many people to île de païn.

A buzzing café-style restaurant on the Thesen Island waterfront, founded by baking legend Markus Färbinger and his wife Liezie Mulder, this is perfect for a breakfast or brunch of delicious, innovative, honest food. The adjoining artisanal bakery produces authentic breads and creative pâtisserie (think baguettes and challah, perfect croissants and delicate citrus slices) to take away, and you can also shop for carefully curated bakery tools and kitchen accessories. A Bistro is defined by Eat Out as offering fresh and seasonal produce, having a small kitchen, limited staff, being homely, with congenial hosts, ‘endless amounts of wine‘, ‘spectacular food’, and regular menu changes. An obvious exclusion is Bistrot Bizerca from this category, but being a Top 19 finalist may have excluded them from this category.

The route begins on the corner of Long Street and Punt Close (outside Ile de Pain Restaurant, Bakery and Patisserie). From here, walk past The Boatshed (once Thesen’s Boatyard, now partially occupied by The Lofts Boutique Hotel), and via The Sawtooth Building (where you’ll find The Motorcycle Room) and The Power Station (now The Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa) to the traffic circle and the NSRI Museum at the southern end of Long Street - a distance of only a few hundred metres.

Ile de Pain was another place we were told by many people to go to for lunch. It was a good recommendation. You can guess by the name they have lots of different artisanal breads on offer, cakes, pastries, treats, sandwiches and soups.

What do you get when you combine a master chef with a master baker and chocolatier?. Pure heaven at Ile de Païn. Chef Liezie Mulder and Markus Farbinger combine their skill sets to create excitingly imaginative dishes.

This is a very good French restaurant, the waiters are very warm, the dishes are very delicious, you can feel the French style here. It would be a shame to miss this restaurant, because it is a great coffee bar.
