Reviews Summary

Nguni Restaurant is praised for its creative take on traditional South African cuisine, particularly its excellent steaks and game dishes. Diners appreciate the historic ambiance and friendly service. However, some reviews mention concerns about high prices and unexpected extra charges on the bill.

"We sat outside in a beautiful setting. Service was very friendly and helpful. Food was just excellent, highly recommend the daily steak specials.
They also have a great selection of wines.
Quite a gem this place and hosted by lovely people!"

Alexander Schicho

"The venue is lovely, cozy atmosphere and some African art on the walls.
The service was excellent our waiter was attentive and so was the host for the evening.
We ordered: beetroot and goats cheese salad and tuna carpaccio for starters, both dishes were fresh and well prepared. We ordered: beef fillet steak for main with a side of veggies. The steak was cooked as requested, but extremely dry, we were disappointed and recommend ordering a sauce with this dish. Generally we don't have sauces with our steaks but this requires it. The side veggies were lovely and we enjoyed the zest of lemon for flavor. Our final course was dessert: a bit of a hit and miss with this. The baked cheesecake with passion fruit was amazing, fresh and decent portion size. The apple pie however was a complete miss, large chunky apple slices undercooked with a crumb and cream, this was unappetizing and truly disappointing.
They have a good selection of wines to choose from and MCC by the glass which we appreciated.
Overall a 3/5 on the food but all else was good."

Meghan McLeod

"Our second time at Nguni over two separate trips to Plett.

A nice homely intimate feel and great attentive service.

The menu stayed pretty much the same as did the quality of the food. Not one of those huge menus with lots of things, but nicely done

Some veggie options but this place really excels at meat.

We had the ostrich from the menu and the venison which was a special.

We also brought our own bottle of non alcoholic wine and paid a small corkage fee."

Restaurants in Plettenberg Bay

Nguni, at 6 Crescent St. (tel. 044/533-6710), is named after a South African cattle breed, and, yes, you'll find beef on the menu in this black-and-white-styled restaurant with slate floors and thick white walls (it was once a fisherman's cottage). The owners also have a strong focus on fresh and local produce, "and that means fish." Also in the center of town is The Old Post Office (tel. 076/953-6888), a casually stylish new venue, unfortunately placed in a mall on the main road into town. Lunch is a buffet table, while dinner offers a la carte delicacies such as truffle-infused butter bean ravioli or basil-roasted chicken supreme with orange salad.

Nostalgic with an African flair, Nguni is historically located in one of Plett’s oldest buildings - an original dairy dating back over a hundred years. Nguni’s African menu is a reflection of traditional selections like Bobotie, game, biltong, springbok, Karoo lamb, ostrich and other local favourites. With its beautiful sunny veranda or eclectic African interior with its original wood-burning stove, the Nguni Girls provide customers with a unique setting and superb menu.

Tides, Fires & Tasting Menus: Plettenberg Bay's Most Unique Restaurants

Set inside an 1840s fisherman’s cottage, Nguni plates South African nostalgia with a mischievous wink. Think springbok carpaccio drizzled in naartjie dressing or malva pudding upgraded with smoky spekboom honey. Mid-service the owner breezed past my table clutching a jar of atchar “for tasting research.” It felt less like dining out and more like popping into an eccentric aunt’s kitchen—if said aunt owned a Michelin-sharp filleting knife.
