Insider Tips

Modern Korean dining tucked above the crowd in Myeongdong. 🎋 Congdu isn’t loud about its presence, but it doesn’t have to be. A $35 lunch course brings out restrained, seasonal flavours on ceramics that feel almost too beautiful to touch. Ask for the galbi—and they’ll pair it with soy sauce aged over 15 years. Design-forward, quietly luxurious, and just slow enough to feel like a pause. 📍Congdu 🗺️...

Reviews Summary

Congdu offers an exceptional fine-dining Korean experience, praised for its unique royal-inspired dishes and high-quality ingredients, often highlighted as divine for those who appreciate advanced Korean cuisine. The historic ambiance overlooking Deoksu Palace Gardens adds to its charm. However, some diners have noted that the service can be disorganized or standoffish, and the pace of the meal might be too fast for some.

"A gem! Warning: This is for advanced level Korean food fans. No entry level dishes. Diners new to Korean food won't understand this. But for those in the know, it's divine. My favorite is the 굴비, which has been dried in the icy February winds. Served with Boseong Green Tea and rice. Also get the 게장 soy marinated crab and the 육회 beef tartare with different aged soy sauces."

Visan S. (Khun)

The 10 Best Restaurants In Jung District Seoul

It’s only here where you can find fusion dishes such as grilled beef sirloin steak with 15-year seed soy sauce or crab marinated in a soy sauce using a special recipe passed down for generations from the Joseon Dynasty. Not only are some of the meals of royal origin, the restaurant building itself was once the office of a Joseon Queen. The views only add to the atmosphere as guests can enjoy the beautiful sight of the Deoksu Palace Gardens while eating modern Korean food.

Congdu was previously based in the Seoul National History Museum, but the eatery has since relocated to the grand former home of the last emperor of Joseon’s grandmother. The fine-dining establishment serves some of the best Korean food in Seoul, with owner Vivian Han travelling around Korea to seek out top suppliers and ingredients. “My concept was to take authentic Korean tastes and use high quality local ingredients and creatively prepare them to titillate modern tastes and sensibilities,” she says.
