Not a restaurant per se but home to some of Seoul’s finest cuisine, Gwangjang Market is a mecca for anyone who has tasted the delights of Korean street food. Featuring stalls selling dishes such as bindaeduk(mung bean pancakes), tteokbokki(spicy rice cakes), sundae (blood sausage stuffed with noodles) and jokbal(braised pig’s trotters), as well as the classic and ubiquitous bibimbap, this is the place to experience the widest variety of Korean cuisine. The atmosphere of the market, which also sells a range of fresh produce, imbues this experience with authenticity, and is an essential part of any food lover’s trip to Seoul.

Why go: Because it’s one of the best places in the city to find traditional Korean street food like bindaetteok (crispy deep-fried mung bean pancakes served with a vinegary dipping sauce), soondae (pig’s blood sausage stuffed with sticky rice), and addictive mayak gimbap (a seaweed rice roll made with sesame oil). But it’s not long before I’m spat out into an alley and find myself in the street food paradise of Gwangjang Market. Its stalls serve up everything from noodles to the ubiquitous tteokbokki (rice cake in sweet, spicy red sauce). Sitting on a stool, I dive into a plate of bindaeddeok, a crispy, dense pancake made from green onions and mung bean.

Once you eat to your heart’s content in Gwangjang Market, it’s nice to walk it off a bit around the Dongdaemun Gate_ area. The Dongdaemun (meaning “Great East Gate”), originally built in the late 1300s, used to mark the eastern terminus of Seoul, but there’s now a bustling market and fun river area around the gate to explore.* The river, called _*Cheonggyecheon, runs about 5 miles with a walking path next to it. It’s quite a bit below street level (accessible by stairs every so often), and feels like a lovely little oasis in the middle of the huge city, with great vistas of Seoul’s buildings all around and, of course, no cars or crosswalks to worry about!

At enormous Gwangjang Market (and similar sites I will visit in other cities, such as the Tourist & Fishery Market in Sokcho and Bupyeong Kkangtong Market in Busan) Korea’s street food scene is breathing new life into ailing retail spaces. Among the old-fashioned stalls of bedding and kitchen utensils, locals and tourists now congregate to sample delicacies such as tteokbokki (sticky rice cakes in spicy sauce), fish cakes, gimbap (rice rolls), pig’s trotters and sundae, the scary-looking Korean blood sausage. Perching at a cramped, low steel counter in Gwangjang to tuck into a lunch of mung bean pancakes and tteokbokki I feel like Anthony Bourdain.

A little bit further out and technically not in Insadong, but worth the detour is Gwangjang market. This is a traditional street market where you can mingle with the Koreans to taste some of the local street-food delicacies. Have a look at the stalls that sell San-nakji which is a raw octopus that is killed by cutting it in pieces on your plate so that the tentacles are still moving while it is served. I can assure you that we did not try this either but there’s a lot more you can enjoy like the Soonday (blood sausage), different kinds of rice rolls and bindaetteok, a kind of pancake.

Gwangjang Market – located around the Dongdaemun area – is another good spot for these types of souvenirs, and also specialises in wedding items. Gwangjang is also considered more of a flea market, so you’re more likely to find a few non-Korean oddities amongst its vintage wares. Antique lovers should head to Dapsimni Antiques Market, which is filled with shops that both sell and repair unique antiques – wander around decades-old vases, furniture, stoneware, and other fascinating pieces for sale, and perhaps pick up some less-known information about Korean history and culture.

First established in 1905, Gwangjang Market is known to be the oldest continually functioning market in all of South Korea ( source). And it’s one of those places that has not only withstood the test of time, but it’s passed through many generations, and I would imagine that it looks virtually the same as it did fifty years ago. Although Gwangjang Market has been written about in everywhere from Lonely Planet to Munchies, what I also like so much about it is that the market still remains authentic and retains its Korean cultural heritage, style, and charm.

If you’ve worked up an appetite, hop on a 10-minute cab ride to Gwangjang Market, a bustling place established in 1905 — making it the oldest surviving market in South Korea — that sells all sorts of classic local foods, from tteokbokki (stir-fried spicy rice cakes) to sannakji (live baby octopus tentacles, squirming and all). My personal favourite is bindaetteok, savoury mung bean pancakes fried fresh and crispy, from Sunhui’s Bindaetteok. It’s hard to miss — you’ll find a huge line snaking down the already packed street.

It’s a very genuine market eating experience complete with gritty ajummas (Korean ladies). One of the two famous dishes in this market is mungbean pancakes (빈대떡), which is pretty bomb with a bottle of soju or makkeolli on a cold winter night (also good if you’re by yourself acting out a dramatic scene from a Korean drama).

Within the outskirts of GwangJang Market (광장시장), another popular traditional market, is an alley of densely-packed restaurants where you’ll often find hordes of people lingering during their opening hours. These restaurants all specialise in yukhoe and sannakji, drawing local crowds every night to the point where each has an efficient reservation system down pat. Let’s start our foodie adventure in the legendary Gwangjang Market, a bustling hub that’s been feeding the people of Seoul for over a century. And it’s what I’d thought I would do on my first evening as well. When I left my hotel I think I had the vague impression—probably derived from travel shows and blogs—that the major streets were all going to be lined with street vendors and that I would hop from stall to stall, eating a range of things.

Mangwon Market (망원시장) is our local traditional market here in Mapo-gu. Mangwon Market has some good eats and it’s within close proximity to Hongdae and the Han River so it’s easy to stop by, grab some food and be on your way. Though it’s not as memorable as the above mentioned, that hasn’t stopped Korean television crews from stopping by with their famous MCs and idol spokespeople to eat up the grub because there is some delicious grub in this hub.
