Reviews Summary

Jungsik is widely acclaimed for its innovative modern Korean cuisine and artistic presentation, earning it two Michelin stars. Diners consistently praise the quality of ingredients, the creative dishes like abalone and gimbap, and the visually stunning desserts. While the food is exceptional, some reviews note that the service can be reserved and the restrooms could use more attention, especially for a fine-dining establishment.

"Very satisfying experience in every aspect of experience you can expect from a restaurant. This was my second time visiting here in many years and it was a lot better. Amazing foods and ambiance. Can’t believe the price we paid for this level of quality."

Mingi Chung

"We had looked forward to dining at Jungsik in Seoul with high expectations. We had been to their NYC location, which recently earned a third Michelin star. We made a reservation for our larger party, which meant that we would be dining in one of their private dining rooms instead of their beautiful main dining room.

Prior to the date, the reservation team communicated with us via email regarding menu selections and the seating chart so everything would be prepared prior to our arrival. They were mindful that we had one person with a nuts allergy and were very careful to recommend nuts free options. The final seating arrangement, however, was different from what I had specified. It didn't detract from our experience but it was just strange that they asked me to fill out a seating chart and then the table seating was different from what I had detailed. A very nice touch was that we each received a printed menu specific to each individual along with the person's name on it.

The food was very good in general and well worth the price. A few of the dishes bordered excellent and they all had high quality ingredients. The gimbab, fish, duck and the desserts were among our favorites. Each dish was beautifully presented and well cooked. The desserts were great, not too sweet and visually stunning.

Where the two Michelin restaurant fell short was in their service and facilities. There was very little interaction between us and the wait staff. They were very quiet, probably due to the language barrier. We saw very little of them except for when food was served and water glasses needed to be filled. They did not seem comfortable and always hurried off.

I do have to mention the conditions of the restrooms which, for a 2 Michelin star restaurant, was unacceptable. The floor in most of them were wet in places throughout the entire 3 hours of our dinner. We all made similar negative comments about the restrooms. It's unusual for a fine dining establishment to not have staff spruce up the restrooms periodically.

Overall, we did thoroughly enjoy the food but found the service and facilities lacking."

Amber C

"Second time here in this Michelin restaurant. Had some unique food request and the restaurant took note but for a particular dish, they require me to top up 50,000 won for it. Actually not sure why but maybe they wanted to cook the fish instead of serving me raw. I gladly top up since I can’t take raw food anyway.

Food is presentable and I love the abalone dish, the table beside us was saying how good it was too, that was the most memorable dish cos it’s really so soft and the cream sauce just matches the flavour so much.

Overall it’s a good lunch that I had. Always so consistent with the food quality and service is top notch too."

Seoul's best traditional Korean food

Jung Sikdang is a groundbreaking, iconic Korean restaurant for a variety of reasons. Opening in Sinsa-dong in 2009 and New York in 2011, it has received two Michelin stars and is ranked the 10th best restaurant in Asia. These awards are certainly deserved, but they are especially significant to Koreans: With the Korean obsession over international rankings (whether in education, sports or economic measures), this restaurant’s international acclaim has restored some level of pride around hansik, or traditional cuisine.

Jungsik is the home of celebrity chef Jung Sik Yim, who is updating Korean cuisine; he’s credited as the first chef to prepare Korean ingredients with molecular-gastronomy techniques. He’s done so well with the main restaurant that he’s also opened a bistro in Seoul as well as a restaurant in New York City. Try the pork belly, a delicious mixture of sweet, spicy and sour, all in a bite; if pork isn’t your thing, order up the sea-urchin bibimbap.

The newspaper featured pastry chefs such as Yona Son, who basically had to invent the modern Korean dessert herself when she started working at Jungsik, Korea’s first fine dining restaurant located in Seoul. “I had to create everything from the base since I had no examples,” Son says. She opted for desserts that leaned heavily on the French tradition, both for the menu at Jungsik as for her own bakery called Armoni.
