Reviews Summary

Diners rave about Mr. Ahn's creative Korean fusion cuisine and extensive, well-paired makgeolli selection, calling it a 'local jewel' and a 'one-of-a-kind gem'. The cozy atmosphere and attentive service contribute to a highly memorable dining experience. While some found the prices a bit high, most agree the quality and unique offerings are well worth it, making it a must-visit for culinary adventurers.

"We absolutely loved this place and would gladly come back if we had a chance. Make a booking if you can because you really do not want to miss out.

The makgeolli menu was interesting as they arranged it in a way that you can choose one that you may like depending if you liked your makgeolli light or thick, sweet or dry. The makgeolli is truly delicious and it is not like one I have ever tried before. We had 3 different bottles to taste which was their signature bottle, one with pine nuts and one with grape flavour.

The food here was also tasty and presented so well. We ordered the Ssam which is a mushroom, kale, smoked pine leaves wrap and it was truly a flavourful bite. We also ordered the Pajeon which was a bite that is suppose to mimic the Korean pancake - very clever bite that reminds me of the pancake. We then ordered the beef tartare (yukhwe), sonsubu and sundae. All dishes was a slight modern twist to popular Korean dishes.

This is truly fine dining quality and I am not surprised if it is soon to be added to the michelin list is it is not already. Love it!"

"Very surprising place. A local jewel of finer dining. Their korean spirits selection is uncanny and unique. Their food is excellent and balanced. I recommend having a drink before choosing the food. Then, ask the staff to match their recommended drinks to what you want to eat. Small place, so make a reservation ahead of time and be punctual."

"The best meal I’ve had in the last few months. Every dish was interesting, well balanced, unique, delicious. And the makgeolli pairings are so well matched. Gorgeous lighting, great atmosphere. Was savouring every bite. Loved it."

Where locals eat in Seoul

For makgeolli (Korean milky rice wine) my favorite is Mr. Ahn’s craft makgeolli on Gyeongridan, where its super seasonal menu of anju (snacks eaten while drinking) offers modern takes on traditional Korean cuisine. Around the corner from Mr. Ahn’s is Namsan Sool Club, which serves up nearly 100 different varieties of Korean craft alcohol by the glass.

I’m not sure how cheap it was, but there was this one place called Mr. Ahn’s. It’s a makgeolli bistro with a very young clientele in a very hip area. It’s almost like a Japanese izakaya.

Mr. Ahn’s Craft Makgeolli offers a refreshing take on banju, the Korean term for alcohol enjoyed with a meal, by seamlessly blending traditional liquors like makgeolli (unrefined rice wine) and cheongju (refined rice wine) with contemporary flair. Each sip reveals the depth of Korean spirits, especially when paired with a collection of seasonal dishes, including the popular Jirisan black pork jamon. The Korean gastropub’s attention to detail extends to the glassware, tailored to enhance the nuances of each libation, making it a destination worthy of frequent visits.

The 8 Best Makgeolli Bars in Seoul

Mr. Ahn’s prides itself on serving authentic makgeolli, but patrons can also try other Korean drinks like takju (unrefined rice wine) and cheongju (refined rice wine). The bar isn’t too big and we recommend coming in small groups (3-5 people). Food items include traditional Korean anju (alcohol snacks) and full-course meals.
