In June 2025, right after settling into our hotel in Seoul, this was our very first culinary stop — and it truly set the tone for the rest of our trip.
This modest-looking restaurant has earned its place in the ‘Michelin Guide’ every year since 2017, and the reason is crystal clear:
the food is simple, soulful, and absolutely delicious.
We arrived to find a long queue at the entrance, but it moved quickly and was completely worth the wait.
The Kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) was comforting and rich in flavor, and ‘The Mandu’ (dumplings) were perfectly delicate and savory.
The menu is focused and minimal — just four items: Kalguksu, Mandu, Bibim Guksu, and seasonal Kongguksu — a sign of true confidence in what they do best.
Service is swift, staff are warm and efficient, and payment is taken at the entrance.
After the meal, sipping ice-cold water and enjoying their wonderfully fermented kimchi felt like the perfect finish.

"We came for dinner and there was no wait for a table for 7 around 6:30pm. It's a large restaurant and the turn over is fast. Food came out minutes after we ordered. The place is not very clean and the utensils weren't washed well. We had to dig through the drawer to find clean ones.
Food itself was fine, way short of our expectations. The mandu looked great but were so bland. It had absolutely no taste, only texture. The spicy cold noodles were rather refreshing with a bit of heat. The hand cut noodles were decent, texture softer than I'd like. The broth, again, had little flavor. I don't like heavily salted or sauced foods but there was no depth or flavor in the broth.
We were disappointed with the food and restaurant overall."

"Famous for being famous. The menu is of only a very few items. The must try is the steamed Mandy of 10 pcs. I like the flavor and texture of this and the mandu has thin skin. The cold noodle is nice and refreshing. The soupy noodle has a strong taste but I find the broth too starchy. The kimchi has a too strong garlicky taste for me. Service is very fast. You order with the wait staff, pay at the table and the food is out in an open instance. Their turnaround is pretty fast and there’s many floors to this restaurant."

This Kalguksu (chopped noodle) restaurant has been in business for over 50 consecutive years. Formally named Jansugang in 1964 , Myeongdong Kalguksu in 1966 and finally Myeongdong Kyoja in 1978, this restaurant prides itself on only having only 2 highly successful stores dedicated to making the best of chopped Korean noodles. Now, the staple restaurants are considered Myeondong’s soul food by many of its devotees who stand in line regardless the time or weather to get their filling of noodles and dumplings.
