What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
La Taberna del Gourmet offers a mixed dining experience, with many praising the quality of its seafood, tapas, and unique dishes like artichokes with prawns. However, some reviews mention high prices and a few instances of disappointing service or food inconsistencies, particularly with tasting menus. Despite these concerns, the restaurant is frequently recommended for its high-quality ingredients and innovative approach to Spanish cuisine.
"Highly recommend this place for a nice dinner. We took some tapas to share and one cooked meal and everything was delicious 10/10. We were on the 3rd floor, the inside is so nice and peaceful as you can see in the pictures. The staff is also really friendly and welcoming, not everyone speaks English though. I am not sure if you can get a table without reservation, but we were able to reserve a table the same day directly on their website!"
Perla
"We visited La Taberna del Gourmet with high expectations and chose the tasting menu (€69 per person). Unfortunately, the experience did not meet the price or the restaurant’s reputation.
First, we were disappointed by the presentation and service of the dishes. At several points, we were served a single shared plate, even though we had paid per person. There were no explanations of the food — not in English, not even in Spanish — which is unacceptable for a tasting menu experience.
Before the menu started, we were served a small aperitif, which we assumed was complimentary, as is standard in most fine dining restaurants. However, we were later charged €5 per person for it, without any prior notice or choice. That felt dishonest and left a bad impression.
The food itself was underwhelming. Flavors were flat and forgettable, with little creativity or balance. To make things worse, we found a hair in one of the dishes, though we didn’t complain out of professional courtesy (as I work in a kitchen myself).
The dessert was served in a dirty cow-shaped figurine, which felt unsanitary and unpleasant.
The atmosphere was noisy and uncomfortable, with tables placed too close together and no sense of personal space. The bathrooms were dirty and had no soap, which is unacceptable in any restaurant, let alone one with gastronomic ambitions.
In short, it was a disappointment. We’ve had far better experiences at restaurants without any awards or mentions in food guides. This one simply did not live up to the hype."

"Fantastic next-to-fine-dine experience. Beautiful interior and friendly service. They offered a tapas tasting menu but we opted for a la carte tapas.
The steak was very impressive, super tender and juicy. The Russian salad with tuna is also another highlight.
Price is at a high region but worth the penny."

The Best Restaurants In Alicante Spain
Nothing says traditional Spanish dining quite like hams hanging from the ceiling and a display case full of shellfish at the entrance. La Taberna del Gourmet does this all without losing a laid-back, informal feel. Alicante’s restaurants are adept at adding seafood to lots of unusual dishes, but the artichokes with prawns and cuttlefish seem particularly inventive.

This wine bar and restaurant in the heart of the casco antiguo (old town) earns high marks from locals and international visitors alike. There's a wide selection of montaditos (sandwiches), paella, and fresh seafood tapas—oysters, mussels, razor clams—complemented by a well-chosen list of Spanish wines.
Why urban Alicante is Spain's most underrated city break
There were classy gastro-bars (Manero, A La Sazón, Taberna del Gourmet) and temples to local ingredients – prime among these being the peerless Nou Manolín, where I repaired one night for red prawns a la plancha and crisp-fried baby red mullet.
Top Places to Eat Out in Alicante, Spain
La Taberna del Gourmet, a contemporary gastrobar and delicatessen just behind the promenade, boasts a Michelin Plate, awarded for excellent food at a reasonable price. It’s a more casual offering from María José San Román (the chef-owner of one Michelin-starred restaurant Monastrell) and her daughter Geni Perramón where you can find all of the classics with a bit of flair. For lunch, we enjoyed the most delicious Cod fritters, Jamon croquetas, Fried cheese with tomato jam, Artichoke heart with romesco sauce, San Fernando fried eggs with potatoes and Iberian ham and the biggest plate of Padron peppers.
10 best Restaurants in Alicante (UPDATED 2021)
La Taberna del Gourmet is a catering project that begun in 1979 which is focused on the quality of the raw product. A place where innovation is at the service of organic food and traditional flavors, where succulent tapas, sandwiches, cured meats and cheeses from all regions are prepared in a lively Spanish barra. Also this is a gourmet corner and an elegant show room of the best fruits and vegetables from Alicante's garden, the most exclusive meats and the most fresh seafood from the fish market.
Sandwich Of The Week: Bocadillo De Calamares Especial (Alicante, Spain)
San Román, whose Taberna del Gourmet has been called the best tapas bar in Spain (and not only by me) and whose Monastrell serves wonderful contemporary variations on local traditional dishes, is very serious about her raw materials, seafood above all, and she likes to serve it in ways that allow its freshness and flavor to shine. That's why she had the idea of reinventing the heavy-handed student cliché as an elegant grilled delight to serve at the bar attached to Monastrell.

A modern but cosy tapas bar-deli close to the marina that’s known for its produce-led plates that divert from standard tapas dishes with creative flair. That said, while adventurous options like alcachofas con sepia y gambas (cuttlefish-shrimp artichokes) don't disappoint, there's nothing not to like about the more classic menu items, like the huevos rotos con patatas y jamón Ibérico (smashed eggs with potato and cured ham).

One of the more chi-chi destinations we've visited, we only popped into La Taberna del Gourmet for a drink and a couple of snacks. However, there’s clearly a focus on first rate produce at this modern tapas bar. A good riff on a gilda is made with a marinated artichoke alongside its usual components whilst an excellent ensalada with tuna, potatoes, egg, green beans and carrot is adorned with flaky biscuit sails.
