My favorite restaurant in the world 🤤 From the food to the service, it’s truly an incredible experience. And they have the best motto “fuck your diet” 😉 I recommend sitting at the counter (bar) so you can watch the show of them cooking while you eat. Its like you are inside of a kitchen! Top dishes that I recommend: tomato bread, bomba, shrimp in garlic, squid sandwich, chorizo sandwich, steak wit...

Reviews Summary

Cañete is widely praised for its vibrant atmosphere and exceptional food, particularly its seafood and iconic squid sandwich. While many find the service friendly and efficient, some mention the prices are a bit high for the portion sizes. The energetic bar setting and lively ambiance are definite draws for those seeking an authentic Spanish experience.

"I was recommended this place as an absolutely MUST while I was visiting Barcelona for a few days and I am so happy that I did not miss it. I did not make reservation, so tried my luck at walking in as it was just me and was seated in 10 minutes at the bar. The staff were so friendly and funny and made me feel so comfortable. I ordered the meatball to start, which was absolutely delicious - so flavorful with a beautiful sauce. Also snacked on the tomato bread which seems simple but it was delicious and so fresh! The main star was the seafood paella which was prepared in the Catalan style, so it was more soupy and WOW what a flavor bomb!! Absolutely must order this one. I ended with the dessert special - a lemon tart which was perfectly balanced tart and sweet."

"Probably my favourite restaurant in Barcelona. I think I have eaten here 6 times now. Never had a bad dish. Go with a decent sized group so you can try everything. Only issue is getting a table. It’s worth the work trust me! The staff are friendly and very professional. The food is tasty and satisfying and best shared in my opinion."

Tim Powers

"Absolutely amazing food. Everything was spectacular. It was small inside. Definitely recommend either getting their early to put your name in or making a reservation so you can be sure to get in. We did not make a reservation and waited about 1.5 hours for a seat. Luckily we were able to walk around for a bit before we sat down. They basically made a reservation for us 1.5 hours after we requested a table. We sat in the bar area right in front of the seafood. Everything looked very fresh."

Restaurants in Barcelona

This spot just around the corner from the Liceu opera house is one of Barcelona's best tapas restaurants, with a long bar overlooking the burners and part of the kitchen that leads down to the 20-seat communal tasting table at the end of the room. Specialists in Ibérico products, they serve obscure cuts of Ibérico pork, such as pluma ibérica and secreto ibérico (nuggets of meat found on the inside of the shoulder blade and much-prized by Ibérico fanatics), though the real highlight of the menu is the market-fresh seafood that ranges from oysters to grilled baby scallops and house special dishes like the baby squid ( chipirones) with white Santa Pau beans.

To get into Cañete, you’ll have to wait in line for 30 minutes as people with sharp shoulders push by, saying they know so-and-so in a bid to skip to the front (don't worry, they’ll be told to wait just like everyone else). The hectic journey to that comfortable bar seat will be a distant memory once you’re devouring the red tuna tartare, grilled baby scallops, squid and white bean stew, and chicken cannelloni. Nowhere in Barcelona rivals the sheer quality of this classic bar, and it’s priced accordingly—don’t expect this meal to be budget friendly (or quick, for that matter).

The 10 Best Cultural Restaurants In Barcelona

In the heart of Barcelona, close to Las Ramblas, Bar Cañete comprises two separate spaces; the Barra offers tapas in a informal and fast-paced environment with a very long counter as the main center of activity, and the Mantel is a bistro space where generous courses can be enjoyed in an intimate, relaxed and more refined atmosphere. Bar Cañete serves fish and seafood from Catalonian fish markets and seasonal vegetables from local farmers, moulding them into classic and contemporary Spanish specialties. The fried squid sandwich and the red salted shrimps are a must-try.

I loved this place because it was laid back (their slogan is literally “fuck your diet”) and the food was high quality but not over the top fancy shmancy. It was a great dive right into Catalan cuisine with a menu full of the essentials: tomato bread (literally served at every restaurant and should be here in the U.S.), croquettes, pork, seafood, steak tartare and the lovely cannelloni noodle which I noticed is available at almost every Barcelona restaurant.

It’s busy and loud, as seasoned waiters who have been serving locals for 30 or 40 years, weave in and out of tables to deliver traditional Catalan tapas including oysters, cod fritters, ham croquettes, chorizo sandwiches, tuna tartare, burrata, steamed cockles and more. The extensive wine list has something to complement each and every one.
