Be prepared to wait up to an hour for a place at the counter; reservations for the tables in the tiny back room and on the outdoor terrace are accepted, but the counter is where the action is.

Cal Pep does have a cosy dining room at the back and a terrace to the side, but if you sit there you’ll miss all the fun. Better to stand at the bar (or wait your turn patiently behind those at the bar) and watch the cooks working the stoves. There is no shtick here apart from superbly fresh seafood, served simply and on plates designed for sharing.

You can count on a line forming in the quarter-hour before this neighborhood mainstay opens – and it’s worth the wait to sit at the bar and see the tapas come together before your eyes. Your server will recommend dishes personally to your taste. For purists, Cal Pep is the place for high-quality and straightforward classic tapas.

On the night we tried to go (August 1st or 2nd), we walked over and saw the restaurant was shuttered. A sign said CLOSED and it looked like it was closed for the summer. We corroborated that when we got back to the hotel---sure enough, one of our guide books said Cal Pep was closed for August.
