What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Rio-Oja offers a traditional Basque dining experience with highly praised stews and seafood. However, some diners report issues with slow and inattentive service, particularly if they are not Spanish speakers. While the food is often considered good and authentic, inconsistent service experiences can detract from the overall meal.
"Everybody told us to go here and we gave in into our third day here. However, we stopped by for a late lunch-early dinner around 4. This was the perfect timing for us. We got a good seat, the food was really good and the service was fast. After 5 it started to get busy and the impatient guests waiting made us feel we had to leave. However, the waiter was never fazed, offered us a coffee and chatted with us. The interior is also really a nice detail. Would recommend, but avoid the busy times"

"Wouldn’t recommend. All of the tapas in front of you are microwaved. Mussels were horrible. They are in a very bland smoky tomato sauce. I didn’t finish them and that’s saying a lot. Ordered the grilled lamb and it was extremely fatty, more than half was inedible and plate looked like a mess. Conveniently a Spanish couple order grilled lamb chops next to me and they were perfect pieces and the plate actually looked appealing. I tried to order the sea bass and they only had 25€ portions left .The couple on the other side somehow managed to order a small sea bass well after I tired to order one. Pretty sure I was treated poorly for not being Spanish. Only thing that was actually good was the cheese cake"

"I love snails. I mean, I really love snails. These were seriously the best snails 🐌 I’ve ever had. They were stewed in an amazing spicy and sweet and thick red sauce with large chunks of spicy peppers and stewed meat. Truly something special."

A Foodie's Guide To Eating Out In Bilbao: The 10 Best Local Restaurants
Pintxos are replaced by homemade stews on the bar at Rio-Oja, an unassuming restaurant in the centre of Bilbao’s Siete Calles (as the Casco Viejo is also known). To remind yourself that Basque cuisine is not all about ingeniously topped bread, order a helping of the lamb, beef, rabbit or fish stews, which are ladled out of bowls in the heated display and served with chunks of rustic bread. If you prefer a lighter bite, opt for clams in green sauce or paella.

Continuing to the end of the street, and turning to the left at Calle Perro, you'll find, on the right, Rio Oja, a traditional bar where more than the "pintxos" you should try the casseroles (it's a good alternative if you're tired of standing up and want to eat sitting down!). The squid prepared in its own ink (9€) and "anchoas a la cazuela" (anchovy stew) (8€) are out of this world, though the truth is everything here is delicious. Accompany with the house Txacolí (1.50€) (txacolí is the regional white wine).

If you are in the mood for something more filling than pintxos, we recommend Restaurante Rio-Oja. They offer delicious “cazuelitas” (small casseroles) such as squid in its ink, stuffed peppers or, the Basque classic, cod pil-pil.
