"Visited here today on my day trip to Cádiz. Lovely period Restuant. The service was good, however possibly a touch slow and the food was nice, however very, very small portions. We just had soup and two peppermint teas. I think this place would be lovely for an evening meal. Cost, soup £12.50 and peppermint tea £7.50 per person. That all said, I would still return."

"We stumbled upon this place and had a fabulous tapas menu here. The service was perfect and the food excellent we couldn’t fault the quality. I gave 4 for atmosphere but that was only because we ate early and were the only diners in the cafe section. Highly recommend."

Nowadays the only historically-preserved café in Andalusia, Cafe Royalty became the place to see and be seen among Cádiz’s intellectuals and artists after its opening in 1912. It fell into disrepair and neglect following the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 but was spectacularly restored in 2008. Now the grandest setting for a coffee in Cádiz, the café also serves a delicious selection of cakes, tarts and pastries (the apple tart is a knockout), as well as tapas and a full lunch/dinner menu.

It was restored to its Renaissance-style glory by a local family more than seven decades later and relaunched in 2012.

For serious splendour, we head to the rococo Cafe Royalty, a recently-restored grand salon, and eat four refined courses of Andalucian cooking for €33, including a punchy gazpacho garnished with prawn, and a glass of albariño. It opened in 1912, and intellectuals, artists and politicians came here to chew the fat before it closed at the dawn of the civil war. At Horno al Gloria, I learn how they make pan de cadiz, a celebratory cake of marzipan, almonds, dried fruits and spun sugar also known as ‘hair of the angels’.
