Nowadays the only historically-preserved café in Andalusia, Cafe Royalty became the place to see and be seen among Cádiz’s intellectuals and artists after its opening in 1912. It fell into disrepair and neglect following the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39 but was spectacularly restored in 2008. Now the grandest setting for a coffee in Cádiz, the café also serves a delicious selection of cakes, tarts and pastries (the apple tart is a knockout), as well as tapas and a full lunch/dinner menu.

While touristy, this café is known for its picatostes — a local, traditional pan-fried bread similar to French toast. In my experience, sometimes these types of beautiful grand cafes can end up being underwhelming, with the setting often being the highlight. This was not the case with Cafe Royalty, where the food was just as good as the stunning environment.

Café Royalty (Plaza de La Candelaria, no number): One of the most amazing restaurants to eat at in Cádiz. Here the decoration is as classic as its gourmet international menu. But, not without some modern details—almost obligatory these days—such as those applied to the presentation.

One of the most elegant places in Cádiz, Café Royalty is steeped in history. Dating back to 1912, it offers a luxurious breakfast experience with traditional dishes like picatostes (a local take on French toast) in a beautifully restored interior.

The biggest difference is that Café Royalty has the best-preserved art and architecture from the 20th century. Aside from traditional tapas, you can choose a foie-gras or a Caprese salad. For the main, choose the chicken or duck.
