In the south-western La Viña district of the old town, Restaurante El Faro appears a little tired from the outside, but once you step through its doors you’ll see why it’s a locals’ favourite. Despite starting life as a sailors’ tavern, El Faro has evolved into a classy restaurant and is known for its locally caught seafood (from €18) and tortillitas de camarones (prawn fritters, €2.40 each). The grand interior is all dark wood, crisp tablecloths, azulejo tiles and ageing photos of past diners – and the waiters still wear bow ties and white jackets.

Among the best-known restaurants in the city is El Faro (The Lighthouse), where every day for decades, Mediterranean catches, newly hauled ashore, have found their way into the restaurant’s fryers. One such staple is the tortillitas de camarones (shrimp fritters). You’ll also find much more elaborate delicacies on the menu, including sea urchin stuffed with shrimp tartare and oxigarum, a fish sauce dating back to Roman times that includes sherry vinegar.

Restaurante El Faro in El Puerto has been run by chef Fernando Córdoba and his wife Ana Isabel Puerto for over 30 years now. It’s located just outside the old city, not far from the bullring, in an old manor house surrounded by gardens, including the restaurant’s own kitchen herb and seasonal vegetable garden,, and the general appearance and atmosphere is “modern in a traditional style”. There are several dining areas of various sizes, some for private functions, but our interest was in the substantial area in front of the huge wooden bar, which is where tapas are available.

At El Faro we eschew the posher restaurant for the bar and try ortiguillas fritas (sea anemone beignets – €8.80 per half portion) and patatas alinadas al estilo, another Cadiz speciality of soft potatoes, thick with oil, parsley and spring onion, topped with tuna (€2.35). It’s here that we have the most fantastic tortillitas of the weekend: thin, crispy wafers made up almost entirely of miniscule shell-on shrimp. We finish with raisin ice cream covered in sweet pedro ximenez sherry and it’s such a joy that we high-tail it back to Pepe’s taberna to buy a litre.

There's also a tapas bar where you can wait for your table or in case you don't want an entire meal and the wine cellar has some pretty good selections. We recommend the smoked sturgeon salad served with nuts and couscous, the salmon rolls stuffed with ceviche and cold celery homemade sauce, the stewed bull tail Chef Style and rice pudding mousse with cinnamon for dessert.

On our first evening, we dined at El Faro restaurant and tapas bar which was one of Rick’s recommendations and we weren’t disappointed. It’s considered one of the best places to eat fresh seafood in Andalucía for good reason and although formal it had a certain old school charm and elegance at a reasonable price for the quality. By Cadiz prices, El Faro is considered to be expensive with mains starting at 15 Euros but our bill with drinks was considerably less than we would have paid in Cambridge UK for a similar meal.

Long considered the best restaurant in town, El Faro (Calle San Felix 15; 34/956/211-068; elfarodecadiz.com) has an old-fashioned formality and a menu of impeccably prepared local specialties like tortillitas de camarones (shrimp fritters), sea anemone beignets, and snapper baked in salt. Cadiz abounds with humble fried-fish shops; Freiduria Las Flores (Plaza de Topete 4; 34/956/226-112) is one of the best. Order a surtido (mixed seafood fry) if you're unfamiliar with the local catch of the day.

If you’ve come to Cádiz to eat fish (and you should) then the Restaurante El Faro (00 34 902 211 068, elfarodecadiz.com) is definitely the best place in town. Located in La Viña, the local fishermen’s barrio, you’ll find outstanding tapas available at the bar – don’t miss the tortillitas de camarones (shrimp fritters). Other specialities include sopa de pescado (fish soup) and pescado a la sal (fish baked in salt).

Located in La Viña, El Faro translates to lighthouse, a reference to the lighthouse at the nearby San Sebastian castle. This eatery is quite a popular local spot and apparently has turned away the Michelin award to keep prices low for its regulars. The restaurant consists of a more upmarket sit-down restaurant portion and a more casual bar/tapas side (Barra de tapeo) which is what I ended up going into.

7 – Traditional fare: Another institution is seafood restaurant El Faro, with options of white tablecloth dining in the restaurant for a menu del dia, or standing at the bar for tapas of tortillitas de camarones, pulpo, ortiguillas, and patats aliñadas. one of my favourite tapas dishes is judiones con ahumados (big white beans with smoked fish) The bar always gets my vote!. Enjoy fine-dining at El Faro for less by propping up the bar rather than eating in the main restaurant. Situated on a side street, this is a great place for trying the best fried fish — a Cadiz speciality. Start with tortillitas de camarones, crispy fritters made with tiny shrimps (£2) before trying more innovative dishes like codfish tempura with Indian mustard sauce (£3).
