This lively bar (with a sister branch on Plaza Nueva) is a big favorite with locals and draws crowds whatever the time of year. Specialties include fried fish and seafood—try the surtido de pescado (assortment of fried fish) to sample the best—as well as sesos (fried lambs' brains). No reservations are taken and seating is inside or outside with views of the Plaza de Bib-Rambla, so arrive early (1:30 pm or 8 pm) to be sure of some bar space or a tall table outside.

The next evening, head to Plaza Bib-Rambla, Granada’s pedestrianised square that’s lined with 19th-century townhouses, for seafood tapas at Bar Los Diamantes. When you ask any local for a recommendation as to where to eat in Granada, Bar Los Diamantes is surely the first name on their lips. This is the place I mentioned above, where we had our first meal and made the mistake of over-ordering tapas because we were so excited to be in the city. Everything we ordered was fantastic, but there wasn’t any need to do it, because you can get great tapas in Granada for free!. I was here with Ren and her cousin so this delicious free plate of battered and deep-fried fish was meant for three.

Los Diamantes opened in Granada in 1942, in a street named Calle Navas. My guide for the best tapas in town is at Taberna St Germain, Bodega Castaneda, Bar Los Diamentes and La Botilleria - all easily reached via walking - go for a Tapas crawl, you’ll feel the vague sense that you might actually be doing as the locals do.

The original one is on Calle Navas 28, it´s been there since 1942. Since the pandemic the original bar is closed (lack of space for social distancing) so it´s best to head to another one of their venues. Virgen del Rosario is the closest.

Recommended to me by many locals, the trek takes place in the dramatic Los Cahorros Gorge, engulfing you in high limestone cliffs.

Cram in and enjoy a caña (small beer) with a generous free tapa. It doesn't get much better than this!
