The floor to ceiling barrels of wine, visible through the windows of this thoroughly traditional bar will lure you into a treasure trove of fine local cuisine. It's mainly standing room only, which is exactly how the locals like it in Granada, but the long dark wood bar is likely to have plenty of space to lean on despite the bodega's central location. You would be mad to order anything but a dry buttery Manzanilla sherry, and it will most likely come accompanied by the most simple and delicious of tapas – a slice of crusty bread topped with mature Manchego and a sliver of local jamon.

After exploring Realejo, head to the nearby central square of Plaza Nueva, on and around which some of central Granada’s best tapas bars can be found. Bodegas Castañeda: Of this list, Castaneda is definitely the most “Spanish” of the “nice ambiances.” From the barrels of wine behind the counter to the legs of jamón hanging from the ceiling to the bull’s heads on the walls, you’ll be entertained from the moment you walk in. Be aware, however, that staff can be very busy and therefore bit less cordial at times. Still, it’s worth a visit and if you’re feeling adventurous you should try their famous drink, the calicasa—it’s sweet but potent.

I visited Bodegas Castañeda on my very first trip to Granada and I’ve been back on every single visit, frequently more than once. It’s now become the first place I eat when I get to the city, the gastronomic equivalent of Pope John Paul II kissing the tarmac. Confusingly, there are actually two Castañedas – the original bar was apparently split in two as the result of a family falling out – but the one on Calle Almireciros is the one you want.

But it was later that I found my joy at a tapas bar just a few streets up from the touristy Plaza Nueva. Tapas have captivated me ever since I researched and wrote New Tapas over 20 years ago, and I feel completely at home in any rowdy, old-fashioned bar. This one was Bodegas Castañeda on c/ Almireceros, an absolute classic filled with barrels, hams, bottles of wine, loud chat and a line-up of cheerful waiters in black aprons.

Bodegas Castañeda is one of the best places in Granada to try typical Andalusian tapas and enjoy an atmosphere that stands out for its traditional decoration of barrels, casks, wineskins and hams hanging from the ceiling. You have the option of a free tapa with your drink and you can choose from a long list of cold meats, cheeses, pates and montaditos. A restaurant known throughout the city for its hot and cold tables.

This locals’ favorite is considered by many to have some of the best tapas in town. Although as in many places in Granada, the Bodegas Castaneda offers free tapas with every drink, for a more complete menu do not miss out on their tapas menu, as some of the plates on offer are unique and delicious. They have an excellent wine menu or for something light in summer time their sangria is fresh and aromatic.

We learned from our mistake at Bar Los Diamantes and stopped ordering tapas a la carte. Like Bar Los Diamantes, Bodegas Castañeda is also one of the most popular and highly-rated Granada tapas bars. Ok, this one isn’t exactly off the tourist path and often you will find this place packed with locals and tourists. This establishment has been around for almost 100 years and is considered by many to serve the best tapas in Granada. We came here for dinner so tapas was not our priority on this night.

Our hotel was only a few metres away from Bodegas Castañeda, so we headed there for lunch. We stood around for about 10 minutes, not knowing where to go to get a table. I didn’t realise that the restaurant was spread across two buildings and we probably should have gone to the bar to get some service.

Split into two bars across the street from each other, this is a hugely popular spot for a reason. If you're after a plate the size of your head loaded with Russian salad with prawns and some beautifully cooked presa this is an easy recommendation.

My favorite place for tapas in Granada is Bodegas Castañeda. This bar is located right in the middle of the old town, just around the corner from Plaza Nueva. Bodegas Castañeda appears like the kind of place that would be a tourist trap.
