Casa de Vinos La Brujidera

Also known simply as Casa de Vinos (Wine House), this place, up a pedestrian street just behind Plaza Nueva, is a must for Spanish wine lovers. The cozy interior is reminiscent of a ship's cabin, with wood paneling lining the walls along with more than 150 bottles of Spanish wines. A different wine is featured each week, and vermouth and sherries are on tap in barrels behind the counter.

La Brujidera (it means something to do with witches, apparently) is a little spot round the back of Plaza Nueva and it has competition on its doorstep in the form of one of Granada’s many branches of Los Manueles. But I always favour the underdog, so on my 2024 visit I was waiting outside La Brujidera as it opened at half twelve, ready to grab one of its four tables that sit outside on that little sloping alleyway. I’d walked past it the night before, its lights glowing, I’d seen people eating, drinking and gesticulating and I’d felt that pang you sometimes get on holiday when you notice a spot and wish you’d spent your evening there.

Work your way through the regions of Spain; the bartender will be happy to give advice on some of the lesser known choices such as Ribeiro, Somontano and Bierzo. These all come well accompanied; the bar specialises in ham and chorizo, and there are tempting mixed platters of pâtés and cheeses available, and some seriously delicious ciabattas, as well as the mouth-watering queen scallops, zamburiñas.

Located between the Realejo—the city’s old Jewish quarter—and the center, Casa de Vinos La Brujidera is a simple, unassuming place from the outside, with a few tables scattered along the sidewalk. Inside you’ll find a quaint wood-paneled bar, packed full of wine racks and odd wine-related knick-knacks. Pick your poison from the extensive wine menu printed on small paper plaques hanging from the ceiling.

Casa de Vinos, we would concede, is not the best place for fabulous tapas but it has a huge range of the most delicious Spanish wines. It is in a small square lined with other bars and restaurants, so it tends to get overshadowed a little. It is easy to mistake the couple of little tables and chairs outside as perhaps belonging to another, larger establishment.

A little hole-in-the-ground wine bar, it’s actually in a cave!. The tapas are small, more like “munchies”, but fine munchies at that; top quality Manchego cheese, lomo de bellota, jamón, olives…it’s a Spanish munchie dream. Whether it’s a random Tuesday night or a Saturday night out on the town, a good glass of Tempranillo and Manchego always hits the spot.

This 40-year-old wine bar is a particularly good spot if your Spanish is limited in a city where most wine isn't on any kind of a list. Here, there are about a hundred wines listed up on the wall, with a huge selection by the glass. Barrels of vermouth and sherry on tap are behind the bar and it's about as Instagrammable as they get.

Casa de vinos La Brujidera (Calle Monjas del Carmen, 2): A place dedicated to wine, with a selection that varies every month. You can choose from more than 100 wines by the glass or by the bottle. In this bar the tapas are small but they are marinated to perfection so you can really enjoy the wine.

It has more than 200 references, making it the ideal place for lovers of fine wines. To accompany them, apart from small tapas, they offer tasty portions of cold meats, cheeses and pâtés.
