Restaurante Mirador de Morayma

Our favourite romantic haunt is the restaurant Morayma at the top of the Albaicín. Named after the young wife of the last Nasrid King of Spain, Boabdil, this place is more than just a fine restaurant – it is steeped in romance and history. The grounds are full of character – Morayma never tasted the pleasures of the throne and was confined in the Mirador de la Esperanza (Lookout of Hope) part of the Carmen.

This elegant restaurant is the ideal getaway after a day exploring and touring the sights of Granada. Mirador de Morayama is surrounded by natural beauty including views of the Peninsula Iberica mountains. The Mirador also has its own garden and orchard, and packs a historic country house vibe that is unexpected in the middle of a city.

It is all about the delightful setting at this Albayzín staple, spread across a traditional carmen – an ancient house among walled-in gardens – with views of the Alhambra. Unsurprisingly, the prime dining spot is outdoors under a leafy canopy. There are also white-cloth tables in the rambling, wood-beamed interior.

As romantic views go, few can rival the sight of the Alhambra glowing in the night sky from the Mirador's outdoor terrace. The restaurant, attractively housed in a traditional Albayzín carmen (old walled mansion), sets an unforgettable stage for traditional Granada food and local wines.

Ok, if this helps, the fantastic place we had dinner in 2002, with views of the Alhambra all lit up across the river, was the Mirador de Morayma, recommended that year in Rick’s book, back when dollars were worth more than euros. It’s not listed in Rick’s 2013 Spain book, which we used when visiting northern Spain. Not sure if they fell out of favor or just were no longer in business, I did an Internet search just now, and it looks like they’re still operating, http://miradordemorayma.com/en/, but they don’t open until 1:30pm.

This restaurant is located on the hill of the Albaicín and has privileged views of the great jewel of the city: the Alhambra. Its decoration recreates the traditional Andalusian farmhouses and highlights its antique portraits, the candelabras to light the tables and the wooden beams that accentuate the rustic touch of the atmosphere. From its menu, the sheep’s cheese board with rosemary and piquillo bell pepper jam, smoked sardines with capers and the Iberian secret with spiced potatoes are not to be missed.

The restaurant is set in a traditional Carmen housing, sheltered from the views with a high wall and spread out in an orchard with terraced gardens. Shaded by fruit trees and covered in lush greenery, with just enough space between the tree branches to spot the outline of the Alhambra. The restaurant feels and looks like a little oasis in the middle of Albaicin, with fruit trees providing shade for your lunch and the buzz of bees over the trickling fountain providing nice background music.

The Morayma Restaurant is the ideal place to replenish your energy after a long walk around the Alhambra, as it is located just ten minutes from the monument. It has the best views of the Nasrid Palaces and legend has it that Princess Morayma lived within its walls during the captivity of Sultan Boabdil, the last king of Granada. It is a very quiet restaurant with a neat decoration where you can taste the best dishes of traditional Granada cuisine.

Another option is located at the Mirador de Morayma lookout point, right in the heart of Sacromonte. The walls of this restaurant are those of an old Nasrid carmen villa that, according to legend, was the home of Princess Morayma while her husband Boabdil, the last king of Granada, was held captive. The menu features Granada’s traditional cuisine made with local, seasonal ingredients and paired with a carefully selected wine list.

We love entering through its whitewashed Moorish archways into the charming courtyard decorated with plants and fountains. Filled with historic artifacts, paintings, and sculptures, this place feels more like a museum than a restaurant.

In the Albaicín, you must visit … Mirador de Morayma (shown far right, above) for the beautiful setting and the incredible Moroccan Chicken Pastilla. Make a reservation in advance. Morocco’s iconic Pigeon Pie is done justice here, with a flaky outer shell of crispy puff pastry dusted in powdered sugar.
