Reviews Summary
This iconic Madrid tapas bar is beloved for its signature grilled mushrooms, often hailed as the best in Spain. Diners rave about the cozy, cave-like atmosphere, friendly service, and the occasional live music, making it a memorable experience. While the seating can be tight, the authentic vibe and delicious food make it a must-visit spot near Plaza Mayor.
"Came here when I was a kid in the mid 80s and just revisited it in May of 2025 for my birthday. The place is still the same and is absolutely amazing to see how they fit over 40 people in that one little room. We went on a night that they had a performer playing the keyboard. It was great. He sang popular Spanish songs and it was so nice to see all the people singing along too. We of course had the chanpiñon tapas which is their signature dish of mushrooms. It was so nice to be here and share in that moment. The seating was tight but the atmosphere made up for it. I would definitely go back and I will definitely recommend you visit this iconic restaurant if you’re ever in Madrid."

"If you’re in Madrid and looking for something iconic and delicious, don’t skip El Mesón del Champiñón. We stopped in after hearing about their famous mushrooms, and they did not disappoint. Perfectly grilled, juicy, and packed with flavor, honestly one of the highlights of our trip!
We also had a Caracaba and some sparkling water, which paired nicely with the food. The vibe inside is super charming and rustic, with a warm and friendly staff that made the experience even better. It’s the kind of place that feels both local and welcoming to visitors.
Prices were fair, and the quality definitely exceeded expectations. I took a bunch of photos and videos because it was just that good and I want others to see what they’re missing!
Highly recommend swinging by if you’re in the area. Even if you’re not a huge mushroom fan, these might just convert you."

"They are really friendly and attantive. Mushrooms were good, so you should try it. They also serve it without pork if you want. My Turkish-Cuban friend (waiter) is very helpful, because he immediately changed my plate with vegan plate when I said him that I don't eat pork. I never forget it."

A foodie weekend in Madrid: how to eat and drink like a local | Spanish food and drink
Restaurants specialising in one dish are common in the city, from chorizo-stuffed mushrooms at Mesón del Champiñón (mesondelchampinon.com), to finger-singeing bowls of gambas al ajillo at La Casa del Abuelo (lacasadelabuelo.es) – another Madrid institution, owned by the same family since 1906. Evening get-togethers tend to be convivial rambles between bars, each selected for one particular dish. We learn all this on a four-hour Devour Madrid food tour (devourtours.com) that wraps 2,000 years of Spanish history around four tapas stops, fuelled by tinto de verano – the city’s simplified version of sangria, red wine topped up with a mild lemonade (unusual, but oddly drinkable).

Devour Madrid Review: Tapas and Taverns Food Tour
At this point, my stomach was doing a happy dance as we followed Luke to our next stop, Meson del Champiñon – house of mushrooms. On the way, we passed both Mercado San Miguel (a slightly overpriced foodie market) and the world’s oldest restaurant, Sobrino de Botin (insider tip: apparently it’s expensive with mediocre food, not the place to find the best tapas in Madrid). The mushrooms we ate were to die for.
